LSU vs Alabama Rematch: Should It Happen?

Vaughn JohnsonDec 4, 2011

The final BCS poll was announced and it brought about a rematch between two conference foes: LSU and Alabama.

This was a possibility ever since their monster matchup Nov. 5 and the possibility came to fruition.

There is not a whole lot of doubt that LSU and Alabama are the best two teams in the country, but is the matchup fair? If you're a fan of Oklahoma State, you say no. But at the end of the day, this is the system that Division I college football uses to decide its champion. Whether it's a good system or not is up for debate.

Oklahoma State has a legitimate case for playing in the national championship. The Cowboys have the same record as Alabama, they have beaten more teams with a winning record than Alabama and have beaten more ranked teams than Alabama. Not to mention, based on computer rankings, the Big 12 is a better conference than the SEC.

Now people may not agree with the computers on that one, but that's what this comes down to—computers.

The problem for Oklahoma State was its one loss. Alabama's loss came to the No. 1 team in the nation and by a very slim margin. Oklahoma State's loss came to a less-then-stellar Iowa State.

Also what hurt Oklahoma State was the human polls. Alabama was ranked No, 2 in both human polls, with the coach's poll being one-third of what factors into a BCS ranking. The people who vote in the poll believe that Alabama is the second-best team in the nation and they voted that way.

At the end of the day, this proves once again that there is a desperate need for a  playoff system in Division I college football. It's the only team sport in the country that doesn't have one. I know that money is the real issue that's holding this back, but can people even fathom, mainly for this season, a four-team playoff?

LSU would go up against Stanford (No. 4 in the BCS) and Alabama would square off against Oklahoma State and settle it on the field.

Nonetheless, the BCS is here to stay and it should be a classic in New Orleans between LSU and Alabama.

This matchup should happen. The main reason the BCS exists is to put the best two teams on the field against each other to decide a champion, not the most two deserving. Outside of Oklahoma State fans, there are not many people who believe that Oklahoma State is better than Alabama or that they'd give a good game to LSU.
