BCS Projections: Clemson Will Beat West Virginia in High-Scoring Orange Bowl

Austin GreenDec 4, 2011

Clemson and West Virginia are on a crash course to meet in what would be a "defense be damned" Orange Bowl.

Both teams have potent offenses but so-so defenses. Although they have been wildly unpredictable this season, I think it's safe to assume a lot of points will be scored.

Clemson is led by one of the country's best young quarterbacks in Tajh Boyd.

Boyd ranks in the top ten in passing yards (3,578) and touchdowns (31) this season. He also ran for five scores.

He struggled in the middle of the season, throwing two interceptions in three straight games. But he finished strong by lighting up Virginia Tech in the ACC championship game.

Boyd dissected the Hokies defense all game long, completing 20 of 29 passes for 240 yards and four total touchdowns.

The Mountaineers also have a dangerous quarterback in junior Geno Smith. Smith has been insanely efficient this season, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards while completing 65 percent of his passes.

He's only been intercepted seven times, although two of those came in his last game against South Florida.

Smith has two dangerous weapons on the outside in receivers Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin. The pair has combined for 2,260 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns this season.

There's no doubt that the Mountaineers can put up points, but I think they will eventually fall because of their defense.

They gave up 38 points to Louisville, 47 to LSU and 49 to Syracuse. That's right, Syracuse.

I'm expecting Boyd and the Clemson offense to score with ease. It will be a close game, but the Tigers will pull away in the fourth.

Prediction: Clemson 41, West Virginia 31
