BCS Rankings: 3 Reasons Oklahoma State Needs To Pass Alabama
Oklahoma State trounced Oklahoma on their way to proving that they need to be the No. 2 team. It is now up to the voters and the computers to give them the spot in the National Championship game they have earned.
Ending Season with a Bang
In the final game of the season, the Oklahoma State Cowboys registered the most impressive win on their or Alabama's resume.
The Cowboys dismantled No. 10 Oklahoma 44-10. It was a complete and thorough beatdown of a high-quality opponent.
Alabama's most impressive win was a 38-14 victory over an Arkansas team that entered this week ranked No. 8.
Arkansas entered this week with a slightly better ranking, but the Cowboys had a 10-point bigger margin of victory. And most notably, Oklahoma State's came on their final game of the regular season and against their rival.
That has to count for something. A team deserves to be rewarded for ending the season that strong.
Conference Winner
If you can't win your conference, you don't deserve to play for a national title.
Typically, a conference has nine inner-conference games for each team plus a championship to determine the best team in the conference. That is the most thorough system college football has in place to answer the question of the better team.
Alabama lost that race. When that happened, they should have lost their chance to play in the national championship game.
Oklahoma State won their conference. They were one of the few teams that proved they were the best among the teams they were grouped with.
This needs to be viewed as a preliminary of sorts. That is how bowl game participants have been decided for years. It is asinine to drop that method for the championship game.
More Compelling Matchup
Ultimately, the biggest reason the Cowboys need to pass the Tide is that they offer a college football fans a more compelling matchup in the title game.
Great offense vs. great defense adds a lot more intrigue than a matchup of great defenses. LSU is No. 2 in scoring defense, and Oklahoma State is No. 2 in scoring offense.
We already know what is going to happen if Alabama and LSU play because they have already played. It is going to be a low-scoring slugfest.
Give us the anticipation of the unknown; the clash of styles; the clash of conferences. This is the essence of the antiquated bowl system that college football insists on using.
Conclusion
In a college football system where more questions are raised than they are answered, it seems important to at least strive to answer as many questions as possible.
Alabama vs. LSU already has an answer this year. LSU won, and they won in Alabama. It is time to give someone else a shot.
The Cowboys have more than proven they are worthy of the honor. They have the resume, and they ended the season with a huge win and conference title.
It is time to reward them, and us, with a Oklahoma State-LSU matchup in the National Championship.
