BCS Rankings: Where Will Week 14's Biggest Losers Land in Final BCS Standings?
It's a weekend of disappointment for several teams which entered their games on Saturday with a chance to claim a BCS berth, only to come up short. Here are the three biggest losers of Week 14 and where they might land when the final BCS rankings are released on Sunday night.
No. 5 Virginia Tech Hokies
Virginia Tech has only lost two games all season and both came against Clemson. Not only did the Tigers upset Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship Game, but they completely demolished the Hokies en route to a 28-point win.
Most shocking was the 38 points scored by Clemson, which represents the most points allowed by Virginia Tech all season. It was an inopportune time for the unit to post its worst performance and it cost them a BCS bid.
With a résumé that only features one win over a ranked opponent, the Hokies will likely slide outside the top 10. If they could have solved the Clemson puzzle, it could have been so much better.
Projected Ranking: No. 11
No. 6 Houston Cougars
After completing the regular season 12-0, it seemed like Houston was destined to play in a BCS bowl. However, Southern Mississippi had other plans. The Golden Eagles moved the ball at will, exposing a Cougars defense that showed signs of improvement in recent weeks.
Perhaps the pressure that comes with being an unbeaten non-AQ team finally caught up with them. They made more mistakes, both mental and physical, during the Conference USA title game than they did in any previous week and, for once, Case Keenum couldn't play superhero.
The loss also means Keenum's Heisman hopes are dashed. He's been a dark horse candidate that was gaining some momentum in recent weeks, but his team needed to stay undefeated to make it happen.
Projected Ranking: No. 13
No. 13 Michigan State Spartans
A roller-coaster Big Ten ride ended with a thrilling, yet unsatisfying, loss to Wisconsin for Michigan State. Led by Kirk Cousins, the Spartans were one of the nation's surprise BCS contenders but came up one game short as they couldn't pull another rabbit out of their hat.
As was the case with the other two teams on this list, it was the team's defense that came up short. The Badgers offense is one of the best in the country, so slowing it down is no easy task, but the Spartans allowed 11 more points in the second meeting and that was the difference.
If it weren't for a late running-into-the-kicker call, the story might be different for Michigan State. But that's life in the BCS, every play matters.
Projected Ranking: No. 16
