BCS Bowl Predictions: Who's Most Likely to Pull a BCS Bowl Upset?
The BCS bowl selections are mere hours away, and there is a wealth of debate that will lead up to the final minutes before the games are announced.
LSU is a shoo-in for the Jan. 9 BCS National Championship Game, as Alabama and Oklahoma State are vying for the position opposite the Tigers.
According to CSB Sports, Wisconsin and Oregon will play in the Rose Bowl, Oklahoma State and Stanford will face off in the Fiesta Bowl, Michigan and Kansas State are set to meet up in the Sugar Bowl, Clemson and West Virginia will square off in the Orange Bowl and LSU and Alabama will meet in the Championship.
With these matchups in mind (and for the sake of argument), there are two teams that could potentially pull the upset.
The Underdogs
BCS National Championship aside, Wisconsin, Stanford, Kansas State and West Virginia appear to be slight underdogs going into these contests.
Though each are capable of pulling an upset (some more than others, as matchup problems are inevitable), Kansas State and Wisconsin have the best chances of an upset victory.
Kansas State
The thing about Kansas State is that it grinds and grinds. When the Wildcats are done with that, they grind some more. In seven of its 10 wins, Kansas State won by seven points or fewer—not by overly flashy offense or opportunistic defense, but rather with a level-headed rushing attack and a bend-but-don't-break defensive presence.
Quarterback Collin Klein accounts for 237 yards of offense per game, and has thrown for 1,745 yards and has rushed for 1,099 more, collecting 38 total touchdowns on the year.
Slow tempo is Kansas State's style, and against an electric offense like Michigan's, the Wildcats' ground and grind can put the game at a turtle's pace, while Bill Snyder coaches up his team for a late-game rally.
Wisconsin
However much hype the BCS National Championship Game may get, the Rose Bowl Game between Wisconsin and Oregon could turn into one of the most exciting contests of the bowl season.
With the duo of Russell Wilson and Montee Ball, the Badgers feature a load of offense that will be fully matched by the high-octane scheme that Chip Kelly has drawn up for the Ducks.
Between Wilson and Ball for Wisconsin and Darron Thomas and LaMichael James for Oregon, the Rose Bowl includes four of the most exciting college football players. A sustained defensive effort from the Badgers will allow a less-explosive offense to maintain a lead, or slowly play catchup, if need be.
Either way, the Rose Bowl pits two college football programs which have experienced incredible amounts of success in the last two seasons.
What About the Rest?
If Stanford does indeed meet Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl, can the Cardinal keep up with the super-powered Cowboys offense?
Can West Virginia keep Clemson's Tajh Boyd and freshman star receiver Sammy Watkins under wraps?
With LSU coming off of two comeback performances that have left its opponents in the dust, can Alabama put up enough offense?
All arguments, debates and predictions aside, we are in for one fantastic bowl season in college football.
