BCS Rankings Week 14: Predicting the Top 5 Teams in Final BCS Poll
After Oklahoma State beat rival Oklahoma easily at home and undefeated Houston lost to Southern Miss on Saturday, the BCS picture became even more interesting as college football fans await the final BCS standings that will be unveiled on Sunday evening.
While LSU is still No. 1 after they dismantled Georgia in the SEC championship game, the battle for No. 2 is a close one...or is it?
Oklahoma State and Alabama both have interesting cases to be ranked No. 2 in the final BCS rankings and earn the right to play the Tigers in the national championship game.
What will the BCS look like in its final edition? Let's predict the top five.
5. Boise State
Boise State will move up to fifth in the rankings from seventh because Virginia Tech and Houston, the two teams ahead of the Broncos coming into the week, both lost.
The Hokies were beaten convincingly by Clemson 38-10 in the ACC Championship game and Houston was destroyed by Southern Miss 49-28 in the Conference USA title game.
The Broncos were always a better team than the Cougars, and with a top-five BCS finish they might be able to secure an at-large spot in the BCS.
No team from a non-BCS conference has ever gotten a BCS bowl game berth without being undefeated, but Boise State at 11-1 has proven to be an elite team this season.
Their best win was against Georgia, which is arguably better than Stanford's best win versus USC.
4. Stanford
Speaking of Stanford, they are likely to play in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma State.
The Cardinal have the nation's best quarterback and top NFL prospect, Andrew Luck, and a solid offense that can put points on anyone.
Their defense has some concerns, and against a high-scoring team like the Cowboys who average just under 50 points scored per game, Stanford could be in trouble.
Regardless, there is no way any team could overtake them for fourth place in the final BCS standings.
3. Oklahoma State
The Cowboys are a very good team but they had their path to the BCS title game mapped out and they blew it against a very inferior Iowa State team in overtime.
The Cowboys offense is amazing but their defense has been weak at times. They have given up 24-plus points to Kansas, Tulsa, Missouri and Louisiana-Lafayette.
Oklahoma State's best wins were against several teams experts overrated at the beginning of the season, such as Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Texas.
The Cowboys are deserving of a BCS bowl game bid, but their resume isn't strong enough to earn a shot at the BCS title.
2. Alabama
Alabama has played their usual tough schedule this season and their only slip-up was an overtime loss by a field goal to the best team in the country, LSU.
The Crimson Tide are No. 1 in points allowed per game at 8.8. They're the only team to finish the regular season allowing under 10 points a contest.
Alabama challenged themselves out of the conference with Penn State and beat several good SEC teams such as Arkansas and Auburn.
The Crimson Tide are the best defensive team in the nation and their only loss was at home to the best team in America, 9-6 in overtime. There's no way Oklahoma State can climb over Alabama when the Cowboys' loss was to Iowa State.
1. LSU
No real surprise here. LSU is clearly the best team in the country and could put themselves in the conversation with the best teams ever if they win the BCS title game next month.
The Tigers allow the second fewest points per game, and their defense has so many playmakers. The LSU offense has also scored 38.5 points per game and haven't scored less than 40 in the last four weeks.
The Tigers are the best team in America and can finish their perfect season in the BCS championship game in January—likely in a rematch with Alabama.
