Texas vs. Baylor: 5 Key Stats from the First Half

Nick YokoyamaDec 3, 2011

Today, the No. 22 Texas Longhorns take on No. 17 Baylor Bears at Floyd Casey Stadium. After a nail-biting win last week against Texas A&M, the Longhorns are looking to eliminate Baylor's Robert Griffin from Heisman contention and cement their defense at the top of the Big 12.

We should be in for a great finish, but let's take a look at five key stats from the first half.

81: Yards on the pass play from QB Case McCoy to WR Marquise Goodwin midway through the second quarter. This totals the longest pass play for the Longhorns on the season.

Halfway through the second quarter McCoy hit Goodwin for a massive TD giving Texas their first lead of the game.

Baylor's defense is one of the worst in the Big 12 and in the second half Texas should continue to air it out deep and attack the secondary.

59: Yards on RG3's first touchdown of the day to WR Kendall Wright. This totals the longest TD pass allowed by Texas this year.

In the second half, Texas must avoid big plays from Baylor's dual-threat QB. The Bears are able to score from anywhere on the field and Texas must do their best to wrap up and contain the deep threat.

3: Total field goals missed by Longhorn kicker Justin Tucker this season.

Texas had a pretty decent opening drive, sticking to their game plan and shortening up their third downs. Although they did many things right, kicker Justin Tucker missed an easy 31-yard chip shot.

If the Longhorns want to win this game, they need to convert when it counts and take advantage of every opportunity Baylor gives them.

10: Total penalties by the Longhorns in the first half.

Texas has been riddled with mistakes throughout the beginning of this game. Although they haven't been truly hurt by penalties, the Longhorns must clean up their act in the second half. These stupid mistakes are bound to catch up with them eventually.

8-11: Texas' third down efficiency.

One huge knock on the Longhorns' offense throughout much of this season has been their inability to convert on third down.

They have definitely improved their efficiency today by getting solid gains on early downs. Continuing this success in the second half should give the Longhorns a great chance for the upset.
