Kentucky Wildcats and College Basketball Teams Debunking the 5 Most Common Myths

Josh SchochDec 3, 2011

The 2011-12 college basketball season has been crazy.

We have seen ridiculous upsets, wacky rankings and surprisingly good teams. The five most common laws of college basketball have been broken, making them myths.

These five teams have all done their best to work around these laws, and they have found a way to bring them into question.

Baylor Bears

1 of 5

Rumor: A team cannot win without guards.

The Baylor Bears have one of the best frontcourts in the nation made up of Perry Jones III, Quincy Miller and Quincy Acy. These three have not yet played together but the team is still undefeated at 6-0. Forward Anthony Jones has stepped in to play up front with the absence of Jones for five games and Miller for one.

This team does not have dominant guard play, however, and their top four scorers are all big men.

The biggest question for the Bears coming into the season was how point guard A.J. Walton would play, and he has been average at best. Walton is averaging only 3.7 points per game. He is recording 4.8 assists per game, yet with so many good targets down low that is not impressive, as backup guard Pierre Jackson has just as many.

The Bears are dominating opponents without their guards doing well, winning every game by double-digit points.

Duke Blue Devils

2 of 5

Rumor: Senior leadership is more valuable than talented freshmen.

The Duke Blue Devils have only one senior: Miles Plumlee. Plumlee has lost his starting role and he has shown us that senior leadership may be overrated.

Despite losing badly to Ohio State, the Blue Devils have beaten Michigan and Kansas on back-to-back nights.

Freshman Austin Rivers has become the leader of this team, and he leads them in scoring as well. He is taking over this team, proving that senior leadership has become meaningless in college basketball. While other teams need seniors to lead, some can rely on underclassmen.

Florida Gators

3 of 5

Rumor: You cannot win without two good big men.

Say what you will about them losing to Ohio State but it was not the fault of the interior or the guards, it was simply the fact that the Buckeyes were the better team, winning by seven points.

The Gators also recently lost to a Syracuse team that was also ranked No. 3 in the nation at the time, losing by only four points.

The Gators were essentially leaving their frontcourt to center Patric Young, yet he has let them down, averaging less than 10 points per game.

The Gators score the fifth most points in the nation per game, however, and it is because of their quartet of talented guards.

Kenny Boynton, Erving Walker, Mike Rosario and freshman Brad Beal are the team's leading scorers, combining 59.3 points per game.

The Gators are beating good teams despite losing to the best in the nation. They appear not to need a talented frontcourt, debunking this myth.

Wisconsin Badgers

4 of 5

Rumor: Offense is key, college basketball is becoming more star-related.

The Wisconsin Badgers have arguably the best defense in the country, yet they are without a star. The college game has become more star-oriented in recent years yet the Badgers are 6-1 without one.

While Jordan Taylor should have been a star, he has not been so far. Taylor is averaging only 12.0 points per game, making him just the third best scorer on the team this year.

The Badgers average only 70.7 points per game, 137th in the country. They are not going to beat you offensively, yet their defense allows them to win most games.

While they did lose to the North Carolina Tar Heels who are loaded with NBA talent, it was not a bad loss. The Badgers led for a good portion of the game and lost by only three points.

The Badgers are without a star and rely on defense, something that has lost its appeal to most programs. They continue to succeed, however, and are proving that offense is not key.

Kentucky Wildcats

5 of 5

Rumor: Underclassmen cannot be relied upon.

The Kentucky Wildcats are No. 1 in the country and just beat the No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels. The Wildcats are 8-0 and also beat Kansas on a neutral court, their second win against a Top 15 team.

The Wildcats have only two seniors: Darius Miller and Eloy Vargas. These two combine for only 10.7 points per game, with Miller being the only reliable senior.

The Wildcats are instead relying upon their underclassmen to win them games.

Terrence Jones is one of the best players in the country as a sophomore, and Doron Lamb is another returning starter and sophomore.

The Wildcats also rely on their four incredible freshmen: Anthony Davis (who blocked North Carolina's final shot), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Kyle Wiltjer and Marquis Teague.

The Wildcats are getting it done with their underclassmen, debunking the rumor that underclassmen cannot be relied upon.
