Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State: Top 5 Player vs. Player Matchups
While it’s Bedlam every year between Sooner State rivals Oklahoma and Oklahoma, the game today has gone from the traditional bedlam to sheer pandemonium as the Sooners and Cowboys face off for the Big 12 Championship.
Whether you’re a fan of one of the two teams or just a college football fan, you want to know what the big matchups for this title tilt are, as the 106th meeting between the rivals will take center stage on the national as a BCS berth and possibly an outside chance of OSU making a case to be included in the national championship game in January.
With that, let’s take a look at the key matchups for the game between No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners and the No. 3 Oklahoma State Cowboys.
QB Landry Jones vs. DL Jamie Blatnick
1 of 5If the Cowboys want to keep their dream alive of making this year’s BCS title game, they will need to put a ton of pressure on the Sooners’ Jones, with the big boys on the front seven of the OSU defense lead by their sack leader, senior Jamie Blatnick.
RB Roy Finch vs. LB Alex Elkins
2 of 5After the Sooners ran for a season-high 253 yards against Iowa State last week, Alex Elkins and the Cowboys defense will need to focus in on trying to contain the Oklahoma running game, as sophomore Finch led the way with 83 yards on the ground at the Cyclones.
QB Brandon Weeden vs. DL Frank Alexander
3 of 5Just like the OSU defense wants to contain the Sooners’ quarterback Jones, the Oklahoma front seven, notably senior Frank Alexander, will have their hands full with the experienced Brandon Weeden.
Weeden has had a Heisman-worthy senior campaign, as he’s thrown for more than 4100 yards and 34 touchdowns in 2011.
WR Justin Blackmon vs. DB Tony Jefferson
4 of 5While there are not many defensive backs in college football that can keep with playmakers like Blackmon, senior Jamell Fleming will need to play big in his final game for the Sooners if he wants to help his team sweep the four meetings of his collegiate career versus Oklahoma State.
WR Justin Blackmon vs. DB Tony Jefferson
Joseph Randle vs. DL Ronnell Lewis.
5 of 5The Oklahoma State offense is not completely made up of just the duo of Weeden and Blackmon. The Cowboys have a good ground game in addition to the pass heavy play-calling of former offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen before he moved to West Virginia.
Oklahoma’s Ronnell Lewis will be the first person of the OU defense to meet Randle as he attempts to bust a run against the Sooners today in Stillwater.
