Independent Leagues combining schedules is a nice first step
The American Association and the The Can-Am League have agreed to play interlocking schedules in 2012.
According to Miles Wolff, who is the commissioner of both leagues, this amalgamation will benefit the fans and leagues at the same time,
"We are excited to be able to bring both leagues together," said Miles Wolff, who is the commissioner of both leagues. "It will provide new competition, and fans will be able to see a variety of teams from both the U.S. and Canada."
Will this be a continued arrangement? That is still unknown, but it will be competitive and will finally gives the fans a true idea of who has the better players and which league would be dominant if it came down to one final game.
I have brought up the idea previously about whether one Independent League champion is a possibility. Combining schedules of two separate leagues, though they are connected, is a tremendous first step and if all Commissioners were onboard with the idea, could lead to something bigger.
With five fully functional Independent leagues operating throughout the U.S. and Canada, attendance ranges from 627,000 to 2,162,000. A market does exist and if the fans were asked I believe the majority would say that they would like to see one champion at the end of the season.
Whether it’s the length of schedule or the calibre of players some serious thought should be given to an idea that would no doubt shake up, not only the Indy game, but the whole game of baseball itself.
If any one has any ideas or comments on the subject of one Independent champion, I would love to hear them. Feel free to email me at devon@thegmsperspective.com
