Whose WWE Wrestling Legacy Will Be Larger: Big Show or Andre the Giant?
Is this really open for discussion? Seriously?
Two big men. Two different eras. Two different kinds of wrestlers.
And there is really no question that has the greater legacy.
Big Show is the kind of big man in the mold of a King Kong Bundy with better speed, more agility and has been a world champion in thee different organizations (WCW, WWE, ECW).
But in an era where big men reign supreme and Vince McMahon loving the strong, behemoth wrestler, Big Show and his legacy is hurt for several reasons when it comes to comparisons to Andre The Giant.
Big Show may have been able to overcome his acromegaly issues, but it did not mean it should his legacy should be considered better. And owning world titles does not make the difference in this argument.
Andre the Giant is arguable the most loved, respected and honored wrestler in the world, EVER. In an era where Kayfabe ruled and the Giant was seen as a circus act that drew money for promoters worldwide.
Big Show never did that,
When we first were introduced to Paul Wight in WCW, he was billed as Andre’s son for his look, size and the angle of trying to take on Hulk Hogan to finish the business Giant and Hogan had back at WrestleMania III.
Yes, Big Show is a better athlete, but he cannot draw and have the fan support as Andre.
Andre took on the likes of John Studd, Killer Khan, Killer Kowalski, Hulk Hogan and nearly every heel in the 1970s. Wrestling at the time was regional and promotional and wrestlers like Andre, Hogan, Busier Brody and the Funks would travel from promotion to promotion to make their presence known and to draw crowd and money.
Today, Show and Kane and Undertaker and Mark Henry move from town to town to the delight of fans, but the impact is not the same thing and never will be.
While we can make the case that both big men have helped to improve their wrestling generation, they cannot be the equated to be equal.
Andre the Giant meant more to the business and was not replaceable. Big Show, with Kane, Henry, Mason Ryan and others is replaceable.
While there was Haystacks Calhoun, John Studd, Jerry Blackwell and Bundy who could be placed in the same genre as Andre, they did not have the appeal. The wrestlers of today who are larger have the same appeal as Big Show whether they are face or hell.
It makes no sense to compare the two, mainly because there is no question whose legacy is greater.
Andre the Giant was and always will be the best big man in wrestling history.
