Andrew Luck Will Silence Loudmouth Bill Parcells for Doubting Him
Andrew Luck is going to be the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft, whether Bill Parcells believes he's got what it takes or not. Parcells doesn't view Luck as the favorite for the top overall draft pick, but Luck will easily prove him wrong.
The Stanford quarterback has a year of eligibility remaining, but he's already turned down the No. 1 pick before. Surely he won't do it again, especially with some talking heads coming forward saying he won't be as good as everyone thinks he will.
While I agree that the hype that has built up around Luck has grown far too large, there's no denying that he is the best quarterback in the draft, and in this day and age of the NFL, you need a great quarterback to win.
Just look at the Indianapolis Colts this year. They lost Peyton Manning at the beginning of the year, and they have yet to win a game. They are nothing without him, and they aren't the only team struggling with weak quarterbacks.
So when Parcells told the Palm Beach Post that, "Anyone who says that this guy is the hands down, Heisman Trophy winner or the first pick in the draft right now, I don't think they know what they are talking about. There's not been enough work done yet," he must not have watched Luck at all this season.
Arguing Luck and the Heisman is one thing, as there are several qualified candidates to take home the most prestigious award in college football. However, saying that not enough has been done to justify Luck as the top draft pick next year is ludicrous.
Parcells isn't the only one to criticize all the love Luck is getting. Former NFL quarterback Phil Simms, who used to play for Parcells, voiced his opinion on Luck, saying, "I just don't see big-time NFL throws."
Both Simms and Parcells are in the wrong, and it won't be long before Luck showcases his skills and makes them eat their words. If he does indeed declare for the draft like many expect, once the combine and his pro day roll around, watch and see what these two have to say after he's done.
They'll either change their mind or not say anything at all. Luck is a one-of-a-kind quarterback that doesn't come along all too often, and he will not disappoint at the next level.
Parcells has made some bad calls at quarterback before, and the most recent one was drafting offensive lineman Jake Long over Matt Ryan. The Miami Dolphins are still looking for a legit quarterback, and the Atlanta Falcons have great one locked up for a long time.
What Luck has done this season is very remarkable. He's put Stanford on his back, and carried them to a 12-1 record, and most likely a berth in a BCS bowl.
The fact that he has accomplished great things for the Cardinal this year with no true threat at wide receiver is outstanding. Luck is spreading the ball around with ease, making opposing defenses look foolish.
Sure, you could argue the some of the talent level he has faced isn't all that great, but watching him in action it's clear that he will be the real deal in the NFL. He has the arm to make it at the next level, but more importantly, he has the brain.
Luck's knowledge for the game is what separates him from other quarterbacks. He has all the intangibles to excel in the NFL, and that is exactly what will happen. The 35 touchdowns he's thrown this season set the single-season record at Stanford, which was recently held by John Elway.
Breaking that long-standing record held by one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game is further proof Luck is destined for stardom.
It appears as though the Colts will have the top overall pick, but nobody knows for sure what they will do because they still have Manning.
Since Luck is so highly coveted, the Colts are either going to draft him or trade the pick to get something else in return. It makes no sense for them to draft anyone else when a lot of teams will be offering them great deals.
Tom Davis of the The Fort Wayne News Sentinel tweeted why he believes the Colts need to draft Luck.
Again, the Colts' future with Manning is uncertain, but it would be wise to have a backup plan considering how awful the team has been this season.
There is so much praise over Luck that one has to think Parcells just wants to be different here. He's going against the norm, but he is way off base.
Luck will be a star in the NFL, and a great one at that. It's a completely different game at the next level, but the Stanford quarterback is ready for it and he will silence the few critics he has very soon.
