Is Alvin Gentry the Phoenix Suns' Coach of the Future?

Danny DukkerDec 2, 2011

Heading into the shortened NBA season, the big question on the minds of Phoenix Suns fans is whether or not star point guard Steve Nash will be traded.

Then their minds wander into who will be his replacement and who the Suns should go after.

However, the question should really be whether or not the coaching staff is ready to enter rebuilding mode and move forward with a new defensive focus.

Alvin Gentry is the man in Phoenix. He is professional and determined, and the players respect him. Those are all key traits, but how is his coaching?

His winning percentage as a head coach right now sits at 48 percent, so on average he wins less than half the regular-season games.

In the playoffs, he has made it as far as the conference finals but has only made it to the playoffs a grand total of two times.

Is this all Gentry's fault? Of course not, but even so, after so many years of coaching to be consistently failing can raise a few eyebrows.

Now let's move on to the big question: Can Gentry lead a rebuilding, young, defensive-minded team to the playoffs?

That is the question every single Suns fan should be asking right now—forget Steve Nash trade rumors! Before the front office gets to trading Nash, it should make sure the team is fully ready to be remodeled.

It is my honest belief that Alvin Gentry is not a coach who is ready to take the next step with Phoenix. His career was mediocre before he came to Phoenix, but ever since him and Nash got together, it's been an offensive show!

Granted, Nash has consistently made sure that Phoenix would be in the top five when it comes to scoring the ball, and he was doing that before Gentry arrived as well.

Defensively, the difference between Gentry and Mike D'Antoni has been unnoticeable, as the Suns still rank near the bottom in defensive numbers.

With all this uncertainty about Gentry's capabilities, should the Suns enter rebuilding mode with him at the head of it?

I think that if they want to truly get their team up from the bottom, they need to let got of the man who has been running this one-dimensional team for the last few years.

Don't forget, before he was head coach, he was an assistant coach in Phoenix for six whole years! Six years under D'Antoni and Terry Porter do not help one become a better coach.

After Nash, Gentry will be the last remaining member of the seven-seconds-or-less Phoenix Suns, and he should not remain there for too long.
