Eagles vs. Seahawks: Andy Reid's Future in Philly Will Be Decided in Prime Time

Adam WellsDec 1, 2011

The Philadelphia Eagles had to deal with a mountain of expectations coming into the year, and they have failed to live up to every last one of them. Now, with a game against the Seattle Seahawks in prime time, Andy Reid’s job as head coach could be hanging in the balance if they lose.

Eagles fans have already fired Reid. They were booing the team unmercifully during last week’s blowout loss at the hands of the New England Patriots, even though they played that game without their starting quarterback, best wide receiver and top two cornerbacks.

There is even a daily blog on NBCPhiladelphia.com titled “Know Your Andy Reid Replacement.” The gist of it is each day they will do a write-up on a potential coaching replacement for Reid assuming that he gets fired.

Tonight’s game might be the most important one that Reid has ever coached for this franchise. The writing appears to be on the wall, though he seems to be in good standing with his bosses because they have not said anything publicly about his future.

Still, a loss against the lowly Seahawks, who rank near the bottom of the league in total offense (30th) and points per game (26th), should be the final nail in the coffin.

Reid appears to have lost complete control of this team. DeSean Jackson, who has always been a diva, seems hell bent on doing whatever he wants. None of the players speak out in support of their coach and he does not look like he is having any fun doing the job anymore.

Eagles fans have always had a love-hate relationship with Reid. He helped bring the franchise back to prominence, which made him a revered figure. But after a while the shine started to wear off because they weren’t winning enough.

They always seemed to play in NFC Championship games at the start of the 2000s, but only played in one Super Bowl.

Reid has been getting criticized a lot in recent years for his game-calling and inability to lead this team back to where it was in 2004 when it reached the Super Bowl.

The failures of this season have caused for fans to call for his job, and another bad performance in this prime-time spotlight game will surely mark the end of the Andy Reid era in Philadelphia.
