The Lamest Feuds in Sports

Zack PumerantzDec 2, 2011

While there have been many intriguing disputes in the world of sports, there are those times when arrogant stars, delusional scrubs and fiery coaches get carried away.

Whether the bad blood was sparked by a ridiculous twitter altercation or ignited by the juvenile handling of a routine situation, these far-from-professional feuds continue to baffle fans.

These bickering battles may be momentarily entertaining, but in the long run they tarnish the reputations of those involved.

Let's take a look at the lamest feuds in sports.

Enjoy.

15. Ruben Patterson vs. Kobe Bryant

1 of 15

This registered sex offender and chronic trash talker made more news off the court than he did on.

Ruben Patterson may have been drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1998, but he didn't think too highly of their franchise guard.

In an act of blundering self-obsession, Patterson dubbed himself the "Kobe Stopper," claiming he could contain the future Hall-of-Famer with his physical play.

After being humbled numerous times by Kobe Bryant, Patterson finished his career in Lebanon, ironically playing for Champville.

14. Jay Cutler vs. Philip Rivers

2 of 15

For once, NFL fans can agree with Jay Cutler.

If Philip Rivers' immature trash talking doesn't turn the media away, perhaps his arrogant air can get the job done.

While he continues to lose games for the San Diego Chargers, Cutler stays confidently-distant from any possible bullying.

13. Barry Bonds vs. the World

3 of 15

One might expect a 14-time All-Star, eight-time Gold Glove winner and the all-time homerun record holder (762) to be embraced by the baseball world and its fans.

Barry Bonds, however, seemingly never got along with anyone. His alleged involvement with steroids later in his career and feud with Jeff Kent surely didn't help.

After leaving the Bay Area, the former San Francisco Giant hoped to find another team. There was naturally no interest.

12. Tony Kornheiser vs. Jay Mariotti

4 of 15

From sports page columnist to colorful host of ESPN's Pardon the Interruption, Tony Kornheiser has seemingly become the poster child for the transition from print to cable journalism.

Jay Mariotti followed a similar route, moving from his Chicago Sun-Times column to regular appearances on Around the Horn.

Their feud allegedly dates back to 2004, when an ESPN Radio affiliate in Chicago replaced Kornheiser’s show with Mariotti's program.

Kornheiser never seems to shy away from sharing his negative feelings about his obnoxious peer.

11. Carlos Boozer vs. Chris Bosh

5 of 15

While both were prized free agents in the 2010 class, Chris Bosh and Carlos Boozer seemingly took different routes.

Boozer eventually signed with Chicago for $13.5 million, while Bosh helped form the "Big Three" in Miami when he signed for just over $16 million.

When they met in the Eastern Conference Finals, the opportunity for an exciting matchup was in full force.

Boozer, however, refused to say Bosh's name and repeatedly stated that the Heat had two great players. Bosh's stellar performance eventually spoke for itself.

10. Stan Van Gundy vs. David Stern

6 of 15

While the younger brother of former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy is known for his audacious and impulsive nature, his comments towards David Stern undoubtedly created a bit of tension between him and the NBA commissioner.

The easy-flowing nature of the NBA was once again disrupted, although it was the last of Stan Van Gundy's Stern-related comments.

Just another speed bump for David Stern to deal with.

9. Ty Lawson vs. the State of Utah

7 of 15

After winning Game 5 against the Jazz in the 2010 playoffs, the Nuggets were undeniably optimistic about their chances to overtake the series...until their young point guard began to fill in the 140-word limit on twitter.

While this clearly wasn't the first time that Ty Lawson's instinctual thoughts have taken over, calling Utah "dumb boring" undoubtedly gave his opponents plenty of reasons to play harder.

Any city is boring when the team is losing.

8. Antonio Cromartie vs. Tom Brady

8 of 15

Darrelle Revis' second fiddle must've cried himself to sleep out of anger or frustration after watching this reaction to his comments.

Leading up to their vicious Divisional Round matchup last season, the Patriots and Jets had a bit of yapping to accomplish before knocking heads.

Regarding Tom Brady's celebrations, Antonio Cromartie had some choice words to describe the star quarterback.

Yet again, Brady wasn't fazed.

7. Skip Bayless vs. LeBron James

9 of 15

While LeBron James may have deserved the criticism he received from the media regarding his postseason performances last season, this isn't the first time he's been targeted by notorious hater Skip Bayless.

Known for his superfluously-negative comments on ESPN First Take and its afternoon show 1st and 10, Bayless seemingly always looks at "The King" as his easy target.

6. Josh Scobee vs. DeSean Jackson

10 of 15

While it's safe to say this entire list could potentially feature twitter wars, this tweet was a bit more significant considering Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee essentially relayed fans' likely feelings about the Philadelphia ego-brat.

With DeSean Jackson's potency mostly showing up during returns, a kicker seems like the ideal player to speak his mind.

5. Bruce Boudreau vs. Dan Bylsma

11 of 15

“The funny part to me, they showed Dan Bylsma. I coached him at one point, and he was a good guy. But they showed him at Christmas, at home, just eating with his wife and child. Remember that part? They’ve got Christmas music piped in through the house. Who, at home, has dinner with their wife and child [listening to Christmas music]? And they’re all dressed up in their suits, eating [formally]. We were eating, they’re filming, they’re this close, there’s spaghetti all over my shirt, the cat’s licking the food off the floor. That’s not real. They wanted us to look bad.”

Apparently former Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau wasn't pleased with the way HBO "favored" the Pittsburgh Penguins on 24/7

Whether it was scripted or Dan Bylsma is realistically an angelic family man, the NHL always seems to revolve around Sidney Crosby's team.

4. Bobby Petrino vs. Les Miles

12 of 15

Whether he disapproves of Les Miles' affinity for grass or despises his unique name, it's clear that Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino is not a fan.

After LSU had kicked a field goal to increase their lead to 41-17, Bobby Petrino seemingly decided to blame his opponents for running up the score.

Listening to a man who ditched the Atlanta Falcons in the middle of the 2007 season is more than a daunting task.

His words may not be loud, but they are quite obvious.

3. Jim Schwartz vs. John Harbaugh

13 of 15

Seemingly triggered by a rough handshake, these two fiery coaches went head-to-head in a vicious battle of wits and patience.

After a harmless meeting at midfield, a hefty push and physical meeting of the hands sparked what would become front-page entertainment for NFL fans.

Their players were undoubtedly very pleased.

2. Joe Montana vs. Rudy

14 of 15

While it's baffling as to why Joe Montana felt it was necessary to "debunk" his old teammate and the inspiration for Rudy, his Hall-of-Fame resume begs us to listen.

We'd still like to believe that Daniel Ruettiger got carried off with a furious respect and admiration from fans and teammates.

1. Joe Kapp vs. Angelo Mosca

15 of 15

This elderly battle is the perfect appetizer to a necessary future fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

At an alumni luncheon for legends of the Canadian Football League, 73-year-old former quarterback Joe Kapp punched 74-year-old former defensive lineman and wrestler Angelo Mosca.

While it's common knowledge that the two have been heated rivals since the 1963 Grey Cup (championship game), their seemingly-scripted fight was far from expected.

Comedian Ron James told Kapp to present Mosca with an olive branch as a peace offering, but Kapp clearly had different ideas.
