Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito: 5 Opponents Junito Could Take on Next
After the dust settles on Saturday night's rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, Cotto will then be able to turn his attention to who he will fight next after he presumably beats Margarito sans illegally-wrapped hands.
Here are five possible opponents Junito could take on next inside the ring after Saturday night.
Floyd Mayweather
1 of 5Floyd Mayweather is looking for a big-name fighter to take on May 5th, 2012, and if Manny Pacquiao doesn't sign on the dotted line to fight Money May, Miguel Cotto would be a great matchup.
Cotto and Mayweather have been rumored to fight off and on for the last several years, but no fight has ever came to fruition.
Mayweather would get a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter in the world as an opponent and Cotto would get a chance to knock off the top P4P fighter in the world.
Saul Alvarez
2 of 5Fellow junior middleweight champ Saul Alvarez would be a very real possibility for Miguel Cotto after the Antonio Margarito fight, as the winner would unite two of the light middleweight title belts.
Alvarez (39-0, 29 KOs) is coming off an impressive TKO victory over Kermit Cintron and would be the best opponent for Cotto outside of Floyd Mayweather.
The fight would be a slugfest and could be good enough to warrant a rematch, which would be great for the two fighters and the sport of boxing.
Timothy Bradley
3 of 5Undefeated light welterweight Timothy Bradley would have to face Miguel Cotto at around 154, but Bradley could be effective at the higher weight, so the chance of this fight happening is better than most would think.
Bradley's last showing in the ring was a good one, as he beat Joel Casamayor via a TKO victory in Round 8 last month.
A fight with Cotto would allow Bradley to fight a boxer with a fairly big name and would make for a good draw at the gate and on pay-per-view.
It would be interesting to see which fighter's style would dictate the pace of the fight, and it would offer fans a look at two of the best fighters in the ring outside of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
Sergei Dzinziruk
4 of 5Sergei Dzinziruk was stripped of his WBO junior welterweight belt due to missing his match with Lukas Konecny due to a shoulder injury.
Once Dzinziruk (37-1, 23 KOs) is healed, taking on Miguel Cotto will allow him a shot at obtaining another title in the junior welterweight ranks and give him a big-name win in the process.
Victor Ortiz
5 of 5Miguel Cotto would make for a great return opponent for Victor Ortiz after his controversial KO loss to Floyd Mayweather this past September. Ortiz would give Cotto more of a fight than he did against Mayweather.
Cotto and Ortiz have big enough names to carry a fight card featuring them as the main event, and it would set up an exciting pair of boxers who would not fail to satisfy.
If Andre Berto doesn't get his rematch against Ortiz, Cotto and Ortiz would be smart to set a fight up and could be a co-main event on the pending May 5th, 2012 fight of Floyd Mayweather.
