Heisman Watch: Can Robert Griffin Do Enough Against Texas for a Heisman Push?
Last week I made a case for why Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III should win the Heisman trophy. It was a shot in the dark as I know there are a couple of candidates that are more likely to win the award than he is.
But when you look at the stats, he really should be a top candidate and shouldn't surprise anyone if does in fact end up winning.
But assuming he is still at the bottom of a lot of voters' ballots, what in the world does he have to do this week against Texas to gain some attention?
Obviously he needs to have a great game. I'd say similar to the game he played against TCU Week 1 when he threw for 359 yards and five touchdowns. That was the game that immediately put him in the Heisman watch to begin with.
A game like that again would have to at least make the voters think about giving RG3 the hardware. That would give Griffin two games that were better than any Andrew Luck has played all season.
It would also be because of Griffin that they beat Oklahoma for the first time and beat Texas for just the third time in 19 tries. It would be the first time the Bears have won back-to-back games against the Longhorns since 1988-1989.
Griffin is not only putting up impressive numbers, he's carrying this team on his back and breaking school droughts. Baylor is relevant in football for the first time in my lifetime. You can thank Robert Griffin for that.
A great performance would also be the last thing in the voters minds as both Alabama running back Trent Richardson and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck don't play anymore. He has to take advantage of this opportunity.
Unfortunately, if he hasn't impressed the voters yet, anything he does against Texas won't be enough to change their minds.
