NFL Week 13 Picks: Looking at Defenses Sure to Beat Opponents into Submission

John RozumNov 30, 2011

Anytime a defense thoroughly dominates an offense it can affect not only the outcome of that game, but the rest of the season. And with offenses having more expectations to put up points, not scoring becomes extremely detrimental.

That said, here are three defenses who will put the beat down on their opponents in Week 13.

Jacksonville Jaguars (vs Chargers)

The Jaguars may have a skeptical offense; however, they're defense is a lot better than advertised. Currently the Jags' rank No. 4 against the pass and No. 14 against the run. So, for as poor as their offense has played, that's quite impressive.

This week Jacksonville hosts San Diego who's riding a six-game losing streak and Philip Rivers is having the worst season of his career. Not to mention also, but the Bolts have a weak rushing offense.

So, expect a lot of blitzing and double-coverage on Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates. If the Chargers want any chance to move the ball it will have to come on the ground. The only problem is that they play even worse on the road and Jacksonville is a tough team at home (just ask Baltimore).

San Francisco 49ers (vs Rams)

Maybe if the Rams had a respectable passing attack this game could be an upset but other than Brandon Lloyd, St. Louis won't have any success throwing the ball. In addition, they still have Steven Jackson in the backfield, but the 49ers have the league's best rush defense.

So, not only will St. Louis get shutdown on the ground but Frisco also has a good pass rush to keep Sam Bradford frustrated and under duress. It's not going to be an extreme blowout from the get-go because the 49ers will just wear out St. Louis in the trenches on each side of the ball.

However, San Fran will outhit them and cause a few turnovers, as well. The reason why the Rams have two wins is because their rushing attack kept them somewhat balanced, but that won't happen against the 49ers and Patrick Willis.

Baltimore Ravens (at Browns)

If we thought the Browns had trouble moving the ball earlier this season, just wait until they face Baltimore. The Ravens rank No. 5 and No. 3 against the pass and rush, respectively and Cleveland ranks No. 24 and No. 29 in pass and rush offense, respectively.

The Browns only average just under 300 total yards per game and Baltimore allows right around that. The only problem for Cleveland is that the Ravens have faced much more potent offenses by comparison, whereas the Browns have yet to face a defense like Baltimore's.

QB Colt McCoy has been under pressure against even some of the worst pass-rushing teams and with the Ravens being arguably the best pass rushers, he'll be on the ground every play.

Cleveland literally has no hope of moving the ball whatsoever as Ed Reed will pick off anything down-field, so just hope the game doesn't get as ugly as its potential would allow.
