BCS Rankings: Oklahoma and Underrated Teams That Will Miss Major Bowls
BCS time is just about here. Who is going to go where? Well, there is plenty of time to speculate on that, but we're not doing that now.
No, instead we're going to take a look at teams that won't be there. Nothing is official yet. As a matter of fact, two of these teams have a chance to earn an automatic berth this weekend, but Bodog lists both as underdogs.
All of these teams would be great additions to the BCS. Unfortunately, they are going to be victims of numbers.
Oklahoma
Not unlike Wisconsin, Oklahoma is not far from being undefeated. But blowout wins against Texas and Kansas State (both ranked) have shown us how good the Sooners really are. They do seem to lack focus from time to time, and that is a problem.
Still, given how explosive this team is, they would add a lot to a BCS game. There isn't a single team in the country that they couldn't beat.
The Sooners will have a chance to get in, but they have to beat Oklahoma State on the road in Bedlam. I'm predicting a Cowboys' win in that game. They are a blatantly underrated team that frankly needs stronger consideration for the BCS title game.
A 9-3 Sooners' team would not earn a BCS berth. Still, it doesn't mean that they wouldn't be a great team to watch.
Georgia
The BCS mandates that no conference can send three teams to the BCS, with one provision.
"No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.
"
I can't recall an instance where that's come anywhere near happening. Sure, there have been years where a conference could have had three BCS teams, but never was the third the conference champion and the others No. 1 and No. 2.
But if Georgia beats LSU on Saturday, that's exactly what we'll happen. It's amazing.
While I don't see LSU going down on Saturday, it's important to note that Georgia has been a strong team. Their first loss was to Boise State. Their second loss was to a South Carolina team that's still good and was much better at the time.
Since then, the Bulldogs are 10-0.
If they don't beat LSU, they can't make the BCS, as LSU and Alabama are obvious choices. But given what this team has done, they are more of a victim of circumstance.
Kansas State
Like Oklahoma and Georgia, the Wildcats get to play on Saturday. Unlike those teams, they don't get a chance to earn an automatic berth.
How bad does that 58-17 loss at the hands of Oklahoma look right now? While the Wildcats lost to Oklahoma State the following week, the Sooners' loss is what will keep them out of the BCS, barring an awful lot of help.
We also know how good this team can be. Wins over Baylor, Texas A&M, and Texas are nothing to dismiss. In reality, this is a team that needs BCS consideration.
As it is, that doesn't seem likely. That loss to Oklahoma will doom the Wildcats.
