Jacksonville Jaguars: 10 Questions Moving Forward
The Jacksonville Jaguars ticketing office has been using its "Team Teal" promotion to help boost ticket sales over the past two years in an effort to avoid local blackouts of home games.
After today's events, "Team Teal" may want to change its name to "Team Turmoil" and search for cover.
In a series of events, the Jaguars brass announced it had fired only its second coach in 16 years, given general manager Gene Smith a three-year contract extension and sold the team to Pakistani-born businessman Shahid Khan.
The moves undoubtedly will shake the dynamics of the team, the AFC and the NFL.
Ironically, Khan tried to purchase the St. Louis Rams last season and failed.
With the sale of the team, which must be approved by the other owners of the franchise, comes new questions about the team for the remainder of the season and seasons to follow.
Here are some questions that need to be answered as the team moves forward.
Will the Team Stay in Jacksonville?
1 of 10According to the Florida Times-Union, Khan bought the team with the idea it would stay in the Jacksonville market.
The Jaguars mean so much to the area and are a source for business and industry outside the football realm.
Leaving Jacksonville for another location (like Los Angeles) could have a real detrimental effect on the economy in the city and state.
How Do You Fix Blaine Gabbert?
2 of 10Great question.
The kid is already rattled and seems to have regressed the past few weeks. This past weekend was evident in his performance.
Essentially there will be another rookie season for him when he will have to learn a new system.
It can either really help him or truly break him down even further.
Can This Team Still Be Competitive This Year?
3 of 10Yes, but would you want to be?
The Jaguars would pick fifth if the 2012 NFL Draft was held today. That probably would land them Alshon Jeffery.
But if you are in free fall and you need "parts" to complete your team puzzle, wouldn't you do what you had to secure the best parts possible?
Winning now only hurts the team.
What Do You Do with the Team You Have Now?
4 of 10Well, keep the standard on defense and try to make some modicum of improvement on offense.
Maybe you sit Gabbert and let Luke McCown try and resurrect this team.
It needs a shot of adrenaline or something stronger.
What Happens to Potential Free Agents on Defense?
5 of 10Rashean Mathis probably won't be back.
The team needs players like Matt Roth and Dwight Lowery to sign contract extensions.
They also need to figure out what to do with defensive end Aaron Kampman.
What Happens in the Offseason?
6 of 10The team needs to target help at receiver, defensive end and offensive line.
Would Marques Colston come here?
What about Cliff Avril?
Can the Jags find a gem or two in free agency like last season? Can they spend money to make the offense better?
Can This Team Be a Contender Next Season?
7 of 10At the beginning of the season, all teams are equal. It is how you finish that matters.
The Jaguars, on paper, never scared anyone this year.
They need to come out of the gate firing on all cylinders. If they do, they can win and challenge for the playoffs.
If they don't, will they fall below the mediocrity level again?
Was It Right to Give Gene Smith a Three-Year Extension?
8 of 10Yes, only because Blaine Gabbert is his pick.
If he works out, Smith is a genius. If he doesn't pan out, Smith and Gabbert will both be out of Jacksonville in three years.
Will Mel Tucker Be a Candidate to Coach This Team Next Season?
9 of 10I hope so. I said before that this team needs to keep Tucker, the defensive coordinator, on its staff.
Anyway they can.
If It Is Not Tucker, Who Will Coach the Jaguars Next Year?
10 of 10New owner. New coach. Both need to make a big splash.
Would Khan bring in some high-profile guy (Jon Gruden, Brian Billick) or stay the course with someone the players admire and respect (Tucker)?
The choices are numerous.
