BCS Rankings 2011: Why LSU-Alabama Rematch Should Not Happen

Katie DayNov 30, 2011

LSU and Alabama are ranked in the top two of the Associated polls, and it appears as if the BCS National Championship will host a rematch between these two teams.

They met earlier this season in Alabama, where LSU beat the Crimson Tide 9-6 in overtime. It was one of the most anticipated games of the season.

And it was the biggest snorefest.

Here are the reasons why an LSU-Alabama rematch should not happen in the national championship game.

LSU-Alabama Game

1 of 5

If you watched the LSU-Alabama game this season, why on earth would you want to watch it again?

Nothing happened in that game.

There were rarely any explosive plays made on offense. All the points scored were by the kickers. It was like watching a soccer game.

Sure, the defense was pretty good. After a while, it got repetitive.

It's the BCS  National Championship Game; it's supposed to be exciting, exhilarating. It's supposed to be a heart-pounding game. It's supposed to have us on the edge of our seats.

That is what the fans want. We want a game to remember.

Matching up LSU with Alabama is like matching up a sloth with a koala bear. The "Game of the Century" was the second lowest-scoring contest in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 game.

SEC fans may want it.

But the majority of college football fans want something truly memorable.

Same Conference

2 of 5

Alabama is from the SEC. So is LSU. That alone should be reason enough.

Since the BCS National Championship started in 1998, there have been no matchups of teams from the same conference.

It didn't happen then, and it shouldn't start now.

Besides, it's not fair to give the SEC a 100 percent chance of taking home the BCS trophy.

The SEC conference has won the championship in the last five consecutive years. It shouldn't get another one that easily.

It should get an equal fighting chance on the field: a 50 percent chance.

Other Better Options

3 of 5

There are other teams that are qualified to fight in the BCS championship besides Alabama.

For instance, there is Oklahoma State at No. 3.

The Cowboys suffered a recent loss in overtime against an unranked team, but overall, they had a good season.

If they beat No. 8 Oklahoma in their upcoming game on December 3rd, they should have a chance to be a strong bid for the championship.

Or what about Houston?

It's undefeated.

Sure, Houston didn't play some great teams, but it won most of them by double-digits. Doesn't it deserve a test and a chance in the championship game?

Two undefeated teams in the championship should make a great game.

Even better, what of Stanford? It would be great for Heisman candidate Andrew Luck to play in the championship game—even better if he defeats LSU.

Scoring

4 of 5

As stated before, the final score of the game between these two teams was 9-6.

All of these points were scored by field goals. While there are games that are decided by field goals, in a championship game, we want to see more.

There is nothing like seeing an explosive offensive play or seeing points rack up on the scoreboard.

We enjoy the defense. We enjoy the special teams.

We just enjoy watching the offense a little bit more.

Alabama Doesn't Deserve Rematch

5 of 5

It's not fair for a team that finished third in the SEC to get to play in a championship game. Where's the logic in that?

It's all about winning. And you know what? Alabama had its chance, at home, and failed.

LSU won. Plain and simple.

If you take a closer look at the Tide's schedule, they didn't truly have anyone worth beating except for Arkansas. Most of their opponents finished .500 or below.

Alabama doesn't deserve a rematch.

There are better teams out there.

Alabama might have a great defense, but it's not worth being ranked No. 2.

Why would you want to settle in for a snorefest when you could have a chance to see an explosive game if LSU gets lined up with someone else?
