Georgia vs. LSU: Aaron Murray vs. Tyrann Mathieu Is Real Matchup of the Century
The LSU Tigers have already been involved in two "Games of the Century." And those have occurred in a span of just four weeks.
They beat No. 2 Alabama back on November 5 and recently destroyed No. 3 Arkansas. Now comes the actual SEC Championship.
It can't possibly be another Game of the Century, right?
Well, yes, that is right. Georgia has won 10 games in a row, but they don't match up with LSU as well as Alabama or Arkansas did. It will be a good game, but it's not enough for a third Game of the Century.
That, of course, doesn't mean the Bulldogs don't have a chance. This is the title game and we've come to learn that anything can happen. Still, it won't get the hype that some of LSU's other games have.
No worries, because there are matchups within this championship game that are worthy of high praise.
Most notably, Aaron Murray versus Tyrann Mathieu.
The SEC isn't known for its terrific quarterbacks, but Murray is easily one of the better ones.
He won't blow you away with his arm or throw for 400 yards, but the sophomore is a game manager.
Every time he steps on the field, you pretty much know he's good for about 220 yards and maybe one turnover at most. Simply put, Murray won't lose the game for you.
On top of that, he's actually been able to score quite a bit this year, throwing for 32 touchdowns. That's quietly seventh in the nation and first in the SEC.
Murray has shown that he's a winner. He'll protect the ball and he'll make the right throw when necessary. If any quarterback in the conference can lead a historic upset, it's this guy.
On the other side of the ball, however, is a cornerback who turns quarterbacks into the complete opposite of "safe."
Tyrann Mathieu has an insane 66 tackles (six for loss), two sacks, two interceptions, nine passes defended, six forced fumbles, four fumbles recovered and two defensive touchdowns. Oh, he's also returned a kick for a touchdown.
And those numbers, which are simply amazing, are pretty much on par with what he did last year as a freshman. This isn't a fluke.
The man is the definition of ball hawk. He simply creates mistakes and makes life miserable for opposing offenses.
If you try and "manage" a game against Mathieu, he will make you pay. If you try to come after him, he'll make you pay.
Heck, if you stay away from him, he'll still find a way to make you pay for that, too.
It will be very interesting to watch Murray—who simply limits mistakes and throws touchdowns—go up against Mathieu, who creates mistakes and scores defensive touchdowns.
They are polar opposites, and that makes for a matchup you want to pay attention to.
Unfortunately for Aaron Murray, Tyrann Mathieu has been winning these kinds of matchups his whole career.
