NFL Week 13 Predictions: Projecting the Top Scoring Offenses

Andrea HangstNov 29, 2011

In the early weeks of the 2011 NFL season, the focus was entirely on offense.

Teams burst out of the gate throwing and running seemingly at will. While that has clearly tempered as the season has worn on, that doesn't mean there aren't offensive juggernauts remaining.

In the following slides, I examine the three games—and four teams—that should produce a lot of points in Week 13.

New Orleans Saints (vs. Detroit Lions)

1 of 4

The New Orleans Saints have the most yardage on offense of any team this season, averaging 449.6 total yards per game and 32.9 points per game through 12 weeks.

At the same time, the Detroit Lions have allowed a total of 99 points in their last three games—an average of 33 points per game.

Ultimately, it appears a perfect situation for the high-powered Saints offense to not just put up yet another 400-plus yard performance but to also score 27 or more points.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees is having a phenomenal year, having completed 70.2 percent of his passes thus far for 3,689 yards and 27 touchdowns as the team prepares to head to the playoffs for the third straight year.

Detroit Lions (at New Orleans Saints)

2 of 4

While the New Orleans Saints have dispatched eight of their 11 opponents this year via the many strengths of their offense, their defense has managed to give up a lot of points of their own.

On average, the Saints defense allows just under 23 points per game while their Week 13 opponent, the Detroit Lions, are scoring nearly 29 points per game themselves.

This guarantees that the Saints won't be the only team in this contest to put up serious yardage and multiple scores.

There's a shootout likely in this contest, with both teams able to pass the ball at will against such porous secondaries.

New England Patriots (vs. Indianapolis Colts)

3 of 4

It's proven to be pretty easy to score on the Indianapolis Colts.

When they're matched up against a high-scoring and powerful offense such as the New England Patriots', they're pretty much sunk.

The 0-11 squad is allowing an average of 29.7 points per game, and the Patriots have no trouble scoring well into the 20s and 30s, meaning another serious drubbing is in the cards for the Colts.

Behind quarterback Tom Brady, the Patriots have the second-leading passing offense in the NFL, throwing for 3,627 yards and 28 touchdowns so far this year.

Look for him to add a considerable amount to both of those totals after Sunday's game.

Green Bay Packers (at New York Giants)

4 of 4

No discussion of likely offensive leaders for Week 13 would be complete without the Green Bay Packers.

The undefeated squad is the top-scoring offense in the NFL, averaging 34.7 points per game, thanks to the accurate eye and strong arm of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the skills of his many receivers (not to mention his offensive line).

Their opponent, the New York Giants, had at one time one of the more successful defenses in the league but have failed to prevent touchdowns as the season has progressed.

The Giants are allowing an average of 25.2 points per game, dropping them to 27th in the league in that category.

Even against more statistically-strong defenses, the Packers offense has been able to do practically whatever they wanted.

This Sunday, it'll be another 30-point, 400-yard outing for the defending Super Bowl Champions.
