Bowl Projections: Oklahoma State vs. Houston Will Make for Epic Fiesta Bowl Show

T.J. McaloonNov 28, 2011

The most entertaining BCS game of this bowl season will be this year’s Fiesta Bowl between the Big 12 champion the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Conference USA Champion the Houston Cougars.

If you like defense, this game is not for you. For example, if you thought Alabama and LSU’s 9-6 defensive battle was entertaining, then turn away from this game.

However, for those of you who love teams that go flying up and down the field, this is a match made in heaven. Not only are these two teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in passing offense, but they are the top two teams in the country in points per game.

Both of these teams have multiple games of 60 or more points, with two quarterbacks that are in the top five of passing touchdowns in college football. No one this year is going to catch Houston’s Case Keenum for the lead in touchdown passes, with 43. In fact, by the time this bowl game comes around, he may be up to 48.

Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden isn’t to far behind Kennum in touchdown passes. For the year, Weeden has lit up defenses for 34 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions. By the time Houston and Oklahoma State would meet in the Fiesta Bowl, Weeden could be up to 38-40, depending on his performance against Oklahoma.

The quarterback matchup will be a huge reason why this game will be so exciting.

Houston and Oklahoma State feature two monster receivers.

Oklahoma State is led by one of the best receivesr in college football in Justin Blackmon. Blackmon ranks near the top in every major receiving category, with 103 receptions, 1,241 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season. Blackmon can take over a secondary, even if he is double or tripled covered.

As good as Blackmon is for Oklahoma State, Houston’s Patrick Edwards has been even better.

Edwards doesn’t have as many receptions as Blackmon, but he has more receiving yards, with 1,496, and more touchdowns, with 18. Edwards has been Keenum’s go-to receiver this year in this high-flying Cougars offense. Edwards has not gotten the same exposure as Blackmon, but he has been as good if not better than the Cowboys receiver.

For this game to happen, Oklahoma State and Houston have to win their conferences on Saturday. Let’s hope that happens, as this game has the potential to have a final score of 59-56.
