Urban Meyer: Agent Confirms Reports of Meyer to Ohio State
Urban Meyer is the new head football coach at Ohio State. Soak it in.
While reports have run rampant over the last few weeks, the former Florida Gators coach has been adamant about not taking the Ohio State job. That makes him look foolish now, though.
If everyone in Buckeye nation knew that Meyer was the heir apparent to the head coaching throne, why didn’t Meyer just say "no comment"?
Meyer could have just said "no comment" instead of lying to people. That only makes him look bad to the media and college football officials and didn’t help the situation.
The Associated Press is reporting that Meyer and his agent have confirmed reports that the coach has signed with Ohio State:
"Former Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer has taken the head coaching job at Ohio State, his agent, Trace Armstrong, confirmed Monday morning…Meyer had been working as a game analyst this season for ESPN. But Meyer requested off his appearance this weekend as reports swirled of his imminent hire with the Buckeyes…Sources told WKMG-TV in Orlando last week that Meyer would be introduced in coming days after agreeing to a seven-year, $40 million deal.
"
Of course, Meyer could have handled the whole situation better, but he will have plenty of time and money in Ohio State to think about how he can do it next time.
The Big Ten just got the kind of powerhouse that can both bring championships to the conference and draw interest of teams trying to join bigger affiliations. When the conference realignment completely blows up and four major groups are left, the Big Ten will have no problem getting teams to join thanks to Meyer.
Ohio State just got prestigious again. This signing shows that Ohio State is willing to do whatever it takes to get back to prominence, even by signing one of the most controversial coaches in the sport.
With Ohio State coming off questions about illegal player benefits and the scandal that surrounded it, the last thing the Buckeyes need is another scandal. We’ll just have to see how that goes.
