BCS Bowl Projections: Virginia Tech Won't Get Orange Bowl Rematch with Stanford

David DanielsNov 27, 2011

Revenge is virtually out of reach for Virginia Tech this season.

In the 2011 Orange Bowl, Andrew Luck could’ve been mistaken for a KFC employee by the way he fried the Hokies, 40-12.  After such a slaughter, VT understandably would love to return the favor this year.  All they have to do to return to the Orange Bowl is take out Clemson this Saturday, but getting the Stanford Cardinal there is a different story.

The order of the bowl games that get to choose the teams they want this season is Fiesta, Sugar and then Orange.

Alabama and LSU are most likely national championship bound.  Oregon and Wisconsin will face off in the Rose Bowl barring an upset from Michigan State or UCLA.  Assuming that Oklahoma State takes care of business against Oklahoma, the next best at-large bid would definitely be Stanford.

The Sugar Bowl will have a bit of freedom with two SEC teams matched up in the national title.  Houston would without a doubt receive one bid and Michigan is a likely candidate for the other.  That leaves West Virginia or the eventual Big East champion for the Hokies to whip up on in the Orange Bowl.

Such a matchup would be interesting, though, as it would renew the Black Diamond rivalry.  Va Tech and WVU once called each other rivals, but the two schools haven’t played since 2005.  Virginia Tech won their last meeting, but the Mountaineers hold the all-time series lead 28-21-1.

Revenge would be ideal, but beating down an old rival is a solid plan B for VT.
