Urban Meyer Ohio State Rumors: Buckeyes Set for Run of Big Ten Dominance
Urban Meyer is going to rule the Big Ten. He is quickly going to turn that conference into a battle for second place.
If and when Meyer's signing with the Buckeyes is finalized, Ohio State will have turned the ugly situation of Tressel's scandal driven departure into a bright future.
ESPN is reporting this is a done deal. Nothing has been officially announced yet.
Meyer's Resume
Meyer is one of college football's most well respected coaches, and for good reason. He has dominated everywhere he has been.
His 10-year head coaching career has seen him run Florida, Utah and Bowling Green to a 104-23 record.
Recruiting
Ohio State is still a big name university. They have had a down season this year, but they are coming off of a long run of Top 25 relevance in the Jim Tressel era.
The Buckeye name alone is enough to lure big-time recruits. Combine that with the recruiting prowess of Urban Meyer, and you have a powerhouse.
Meyer not only knows how to get the big name athletes, but he knows which recruits are going to fit his system.
A large part of Meyer's consistent success has been due to him picking players that fit in with his spread option offense.
The talented coach will be able to add enough quality in the right places initially that any looming sanctions by the NCAA will not keep the team down.
He'll Put His Heart Into It
Meyer comes out of a retirement he entered so he could spend more time with his family, and limit health concerns that arose because of his tireless work as a coach.
That leaves open the possibility that Meyer may be returning, but not willing to fully commit to this job with the same commitment he has had in the past.
That is not going to be the case. This is not just another job for Meyer. This is a job close to Meyer's heart.
He is an Ohio native, and began his career as a graduate assistant on the Ohio State staff. He would not have taken this job if he wasn't prepared to give it his all.
Outlook
Meyer enters a Big Ten that is void of a dominant team. Wisconsin is poised to win its second straight Big Ten title, but they have struggled to do so, and they certainly did not dominate their way to the title. They had two conference losses.
The door is open for Meyer to come in and dominate. Meyer will inherit decent talent, and you can expect Meyer to find a junior college QB well equipped to run his offense next year, while he grooms a QB of the future.
While Braxton Miller has shown some promise, he's only had two games where he has hit over 50 percent of his passes this year. He has the legs to run Meyer's system, but Urban will want a QB more efficient in the passing game.
Ohio State will be right in the thick of the Big Ten race in 2012, and they will be prepared to dominate it from there.
