Bowl Projections: 5 Top 25 Teams Whose Bowl Fates Are Already Sealed

Matt SmithNov 27, 2011

With every conference playing at least one game on Championship Weekend, most teams must await those results before learning their bowl destination. The selection process far from an exact science—it's difficult to predict matchups beyond those featuring conference champions.

However, for a handful of teams, they can go ahead and make their holiday travel plans, as the season's final week should have no effect on their postseason fate.

Here are five teams who will face little drama leading up to next Sunday's bowl pairings announcements.

Boise State: Poinsettia Bowl

1 of 5

The Broncos saw their BCS and Mountain West title hopes die in a 36-35 loss to TCU on their home turf, virtually locking them into the No. 2 spot in the conference's bowl selection process.

That selection belongs to the Poinsettia Bowl, where the Broncos last played in 2008, falling again to TCU. Their opponent will be old WAC foe Louisiana Tech, who wrapped up the conference title on Saturday with a rout of New Mexico State.

Florida State: Champs Sports Bowl

2 of 5

The Seminoles rallied from a 2-3 start to win six of their final seven and finish 8-4. Although finishing far below preseason expectations, Florida State has an opportunity to build some momentum heading into 2012.

Hopes of a return trip to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl went out the door with last week's loss to Virginia, but the 'Noles are a lock for the ACC's No. 3 selection, Orlando's Champs Sports Bowl. They're almost certain to face 8-4 Notre Dame.

While it won't be the No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup the two teams had in 1993, it's still an intriguing matchup between two traditional powers looking to return to the glory years.

Oregon: Rose Bowl

3 of 5

Yes, Oregon will have to go through the motions of playing UCLA for the Pac-12 title, but the Ducks will roll through a Bruins team only playing in the game because USC is on probation.

The Ducks' powerful offense was shut down by Ohio State in the 2010 Rose Bowl, so Oregon will be looking to avenge past demons in Pasadena. They'll face the winner of the Wisconsin-Michigan State Big Ten Championship Game. The Ducks split home-and-homes with both teams at the turn of the century.

Stanford: Fiesta Bowl

4 of 5

While Stanford will fall short of their ultimate goal, the 11-1 Cardinal will head to their second straight BCS bowl, likely the Fiesta Bowl, to face the Big 12 champion. Stanford routed Virginia Tech last year in the Orange Bowl.

With at-large candidates at a premium this season, Andrew Luck and Stanford will be very attractive to the Fiesta Bowl as a west coast school. The Cardinal will have a chance for back-to-back 12-win seasons just five years removed from a 1-11 disaster in 2006.

TCU: Las Vegas Bowl

5 of 5

TCU has already clinched the Mountain West title, and can win their 24th straight conference game next week vs. UNLV before departing for the Big 12 next season. They will likely fall short of their third straight BCS bowl, however.

Their parting gift will be a trip to Sin City for their first ever appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl. A Pac-12 team awaits them—likely either Arizona State or former MWC rival Utah.
