Saul Alvarez, Adrien Broner, Gary Russell Jr. All Win by Knockout
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO) impressed in his home country of Mexico by disposing of Puerto Rican standout and former world champion Kermit Cintron (33-5-1, 28 KO) is Round 5.
Alvarez was very patient and waited for Cintron to make small mistakes that could be taken advantage of. The 21-year-old Canelo floored Cintron in Round 4.
In Round 5, Cintron battled back, but was hurt badly against the ropes. After Cintron bent over, tired and hurt from Alvarez's series of punches, the referee stepped in to save Cintron.
Alvarez has knocked out a good veteran in five rounds a week after his chief rival, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KO), disposed of good veteran Peter Manfredo (37-7, 20 KO) in five rounds.
Both fighters are showing improved boxing skills and decent chins. Maybe a clash between the two Mexican stars can be produced next year.
When asked who he wants next, Canelo said Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO). While he was impressive, he's not currently in Mayweather's league.
Adrien Broner Wins World Title By Third-Round Knockout
Adrien Broner (22-0, 18 KO) became world champion for the first time in his career by knocking out Vicente Martin Rodriguez (34-3-1, 19 KO) in the third round for the WBO super featherweight (130 lbs) world championship.
Broner outboxed Rodriguez during the first round and then allowed Rodriguez to push forward to make the fight a brawl in Round 2.
In Round 3, Broner was caught against the ropes by Rodriguez. Broner used a shoulder roll defense to ward off Rodriguez's offense and then turned the tide on Rodriguez.
Broner landed an uppercut that severely hurt Rodriguez. From there, Broner picked a few carefully placed accurate shots that further hurt Rodriguez. A few bodyshots later and a left dropped Rodriguez.
A shocked Rodriguez laid slumped against the ropes staring shellshocked at the center of the ring with a bloody mouth and a defeated stare.
Gary Russell Jr. Wins by 1st-Round Knockout
Gary Russell Jr. (19-0, 11 KO) knocked out Heriberto Ruiz (47-12-2, 29 KO) in the first round of his first 10-round boxing match.
Russell is in a very talented division filled with many diverse and colorful characters.
The featherweight (126 lbs) holds many wonderful fighters including Juanma Lopez (31-1, 28 KO) and long-time WBA world champion, Chris John (43-0-2, 22 KO).
Russell may not be on these fighters' level just yet, but one can imagine he's not too far off from facing such intensive challenges.
