Urban Meyer to Ohio State: How Much Would Braxton Miller Improve Under Meyer?

John RozumNov 26, 2011

We know about Urban Meyer's resume and reputation. He was able to win a national championship with Chris Leak as his starting QB and pocket passer, while Tim Tebow was his Wildcat QB so to speak in 2006.

Then two years later, Tim Tebow was more of a passing threat and even more of a rushing threat.

That said, for as much potential as Braxton Miller has now, can you imagine how much he will develop under Meyer? Let's just say there is no limit.

Passing

1 of 3

Right now Braxton Miller is a better pocket passer than Tim Tebow was when he was a freshman. In addition, Miller is faster and quicker.

For one, Miller is a lot more patient inside the pocket than you'd expect from a freshman and knows how to buy time with his feet very well. He's not taking off unless it's a designed play for him, so his maturity to let others make plays is uncanny.

That said, his accuracy is nowhere near where it needs to be. Miller does have the arm strength to be accurate downfield, but regardless of where the throw is going, he must become more consistent.

Rushing

2 of 3

Tim Tebow was about as good of a scrambling QB as there was in the past decade of college football. As for Braxton Miller, being just a freshman he has as much raw talent as anyone in the country.

We tend to forget that Urban Meyer is a big reason why Tebow had success. And if Meyer gets three seasons to work with Braxton, his running ability will become extremely dangerous.

First, you fix the passing mechanics to establish him as more of a passing threat. Then, Meyer will add in his jump-pass/fake draw offense along with some triple-option.

Thus providing Braxton with the luxury of keeping the rock on a zone-read, handing it off, pitching it when in option phase or throwing it.

Talk about scary, considering how dangerous of a rushing threat Braxton Miller already is to opposing defenses.

Play-Action

3 of 3

One area that can take Braxton Miller's game to another level, regardless of the RB in the backfield, is play-action.

Add in his threat as a rusher and the play-action can be used multiple ways. Whether the typical play-action of a ball-fake handoff then rolling out or setting up in the pocket, sprint out to sell the QB sweep or faking the QB draw.

What it really comes down to is giving Miller the option of throwing or running, depending on the situation.

Either way, when Miller becomes an even more established passing and rushing threat, the play-action becomes so much more difficult to defend.

Urban Meyer is a genius at putting his players in the correct position to make plays, as evidence by his two national championships with Florida and him coaching the Utah Utes to a BCS win in 2004, thus beginning the trend of BCS busters.
