Tottenham vs. West Brom: Player Ratings from Tottenham's 3-1 Win
There's no other way to put it—Tottenham Hotspur absolutely embarrassed West Bromwich Albion, showing them up in their house and winning 3-1.
In a match that was closer than the final scoreline indicated, Spurs fans were treated to a fantastic display of offense. Emmanuel Adebayor was in on all three goals, flicking in two himself and assisting another.
Jermain Defoe got his first goal since Tottenham traveled to Craven Cottage a few weeks ago. Gareth Bale made himself a little more attractive to clubs outside of the Premier League with a late assist.
Fans at White Hart Lane can boast that their Spurs haven't lost a game in 10 matches, dating back to a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City back in August.
The team won 3-1, but how did all of the players do on Saturday afternoon? Check out my ratings and find out.
Goalkeeper
1 of 4Brad Friedel: 7.0
West Brom scored a goal in the first 10 minutes, but it came off of a header in the six-yard box. Friedel can't be blamed for his defense not marking up like it should that early in the game.
Other than the goal, Friedel was a brick wall in front of goal, making four saves and clearing several others. His best moment of the game came when he made a save on a one-on-one situation against West Brom midfielder Youssuf Mulumbu, who scored the goal in the ninth minute.
Defenders
2 of 4Ledley King: 6.0
Played all 90 minutes for the second straight week. Showed a lot of versatility by supporting the attack several times and knocking a few shots at goal. Got tangled up and was to blame for the West Brom goal in the ninth minute and was to blame for Mulumbu having a one-on-one opportunity against Friedel.
Younes Kaboul: 7.0
Was great clearing the ball and showed discipline staying in position for most of the match. Made a lone run up the right side of the field on an attack, but other than that was focused on and took away any West Brom possibilities on the right side of the defense.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto: 6.5
Should have helped King during the goal. Was partly to blame as he allowed West Brom to string together the four passes needed to allow Mulumbu to score. Should have disrupted one of them. Was energetic on the left side of the field, playing all along the sideline. The goal should not have happened.
Kyle Walker: 7.5
He and Kaboul absolutely took away the right side of the field. They paired very well together, doing the same thing a good cornerback for an American football team does—forcing the opposing offense only half of the field to do any sort of attacking.
Midfielders
3 of 4Sandro: 7.0
Took two shots on goal—double what he'd accumulated all season thus far. Was the first Spurs player to take a shot at West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster, but he wasn't the last. Filled in for a tired Luka Modric well enough to satisfy manager Harry Redknapp.
Scott Parker: 7.0
Looked as though he'd get his first goal of the season, but was inaccurate when chances were presented. Played a mediocre first half and picked it up in the second.
Gareth Bale: 8.0
Continues to play some of the greatest soccer in the league. He was all over the field, placing the ball beautifully deep in the West Brom box for Adebayor to collect an easy goal. Had several other free kicks that were placed very accurately. Missed several opportunities himself, especially late in the game.
Aaron Lennon: 7.0
Garnered the penalty that allowed Adebayor to equalize in the 25th minute. Played the role of attacking midfielder with a little more caution than I would have liked. Took some chances early, but was limited to a supporting role once Adebayor and Defoe caught fire.
Jake Livermore: 7.5
Came on in the 80th minute for Sandro. Possessed the ball well and helped Spurs hold onto the lead (and eventually build on it with Adebayor's goal in the 92nd minute).
Forwards
4 of 4Jermain Defoe: 8.0
Scored his first goal since Nov. 6 against Fulham. Was always in position to make a run for goal and rarely crossed back into Tottenham's half of the field. Had five shots on goal, the most of any game this season.
Emmanuel Adebayor: 9.0
The guy is making it near impossible for Daniel Levy to let him go after his loan is up. Was in on all three of Tottenham's scores, knocking in two goals and assisting on another. Had the chance to earn a hat trick but missed a couple of opportunities late in the game deep in the penalty box. Adebayor is playing his way into the biggest contract of his career.
