Arkansas vs. LSU: Why This SEC Showdown Is Real 'Game of the Century'
LSU vs. Alabama was a great game, however it did not deserve the title of "Game of the Century." That game was good, but today’s LSU game against a better offense in the Arkansas Razorbacks will deserve that moniker.
When LSU faced Alabama earlier in November, it was a Crimson Tide team that had one offensive weapon in running back Trent Richardson and that’s it. LSU did a great job in containing Richardson, only giving up 89 rushing yards and another 80 receiving yards. However, when Richardson was unable to get into the end zone, Alabama did not have another option to turn to.
However it wasn’t just the Alabama offense that made this game a big disappointment.
LSU could not do anything on offense against a great Alabama defense. Alabama suffocated LSU, holding them to under 100 yards passing and intercepting them twice.
That game saw two phenomenal defenses hold these offenses to under 300 total yards of offense. Playing field position and conservative football for 60 minutes makes for some painful football to watch for those of us who are not SEC fans.
Thankfully for those of us who love high-scoring contests, we have the passing attack of Arkansas to look forward to today. The Razorbacks and Tigers will not put on an offensive shootout like Oregon vs. Stanford, but it will be a lot more compelling than what we saw on November 3rd.
When LSU contained Richardson, Alabama did not have a quarterback that could make a clutch throw. Where Alabama failed, Arkansas will be able to break through with Tyler Wilson.
The aerial assault from Wilson will test this Tigers secondary. What we will see today is a Razorbacks offensive line that will give Wilson the time to find receivers like Jarius Wright.
Wright is one of Wilson’s top targets, as he’s hauled in 10 of Wilson’s 21 touchdown passes and 1,002 of Wilson’s 3,215 passing yards.
Today’s game will see the No. 13 offense in points per game (Arkansas) going up against the No. 2 defense in points allowed per game. It will give that hard-hitting defensive angle like the Alabama game, while giving us that high-scoring touch that lacked.
LSU vs. Arkansas will be the perfect mix of great defense, high scoring and a game that will come down to the final drive.
With that perfect combination, it will be remembered more as the Game of the Century.
