Packers vs. Lions: Why Detroit Can't Stop Green Bay's Quest for 16-0

Ryan PhillipsNov 24, 2011

It's safe to say that the matchup between the 10-0 Green Bay Packers and the 7-3 Detroit Lions is the most anticipated Thanksgiving day game in years.

The two division rivals will go toe-to-toe with Green Bay's undefeated season on the line. Despite a wealth of talent, the Lions won't be able to derail the Packers.

While the Lions have certainly turned things around this year and are legit playoff contenders, the Packers are the best team in all of football. Yes, Detroit will have Ford Field rocking Thursday afternoon, but I just don't see Matthew Stafford and company being able to outlast Green Bay's prolific offense.

The Packers currently rank fourth league-wide in total offense (406.5 yards per game), while they are the NFL's top-scoring team (35.5 points per game).

Meanwhile, Detroit's defense has been solid this year but is 27th in the league against the run (allowing 134.7 yards per game), and the Lions are allowing 21.9 points per game, which is 19th in the NFL.

Detroit does boast the league's fifth-best passing defense (192.8 yards per game), but at this point I don't think anyone can stop Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is having a record-breaking season.

Through 10 games, Rodgers has completed 238 of 329 passes for 3,168 yards, with a league-high 31 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He leads the NFL in touchdown passes, completion percentage (72.3), yards per attempt (9.63) and quarterback rating (128.8). In fact, his passer rating is 26.3 points higher than the man in second place, Tom Brady at 102.5.

While Detroit has improved tremendously and I expect Stafford and Calvin Johnson to have very good days, I just can't see any defense stopping the Packers right now. That means the Lions will have to outscore Rodgers and his offense and that won't happen.

I think it will be a very competitive game but the Packers will outlast the Lions and move to 11-0.
