Urban Meyer is Wasting Time Denying the Inevitable with Ohio State
Conflicting reports have now hit the ground about Urban Meyer's future in college football.
A report from WKMG-TV in Orlando claims sources have told them that the former Florida Gators head coach has agreed to a seven-year, $40 million deal with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
According to ESPN, whom Meyer currently works for as a college football analyst, the coach has denied the report, saying in a statement, "I have not been offered any job nor is there a deal in place. I plan on spending Thanksgiving with my family and will not comment on this any further."
But Meyer has already gone on record saying if something happens with Ohio State he'd "have to make a decision" and he also admitted to missing life on the sidelines, saying, "I love football. It's what I am. I miss it."
WKMG-TV's sources also added another wrinkle, according to the ESPN report, claiming that "Mickey Marotti, the strength coach at Florida, would join Meyer and become Ohio State's director of football operations and that Luke Fickell, currently interim head coach at Ohio State, would stay on as an assistant head coach."
That is a lot of dominoes to fall for a rumor that Meyer is denying.
It is understandable if nothing is set in stone at this point, and Meyer is still working things out, but if there is any truth to this Meyer would be foolish to deny it.
This isn't just an ordinary weekend.
The Buckeyes are traveling to the Big House to take on 15th-ranked Michigan, and every high school kid and then some considering either of these schools will be watching with their friends and family over the holiday.
If Meyer's name is linked to Ohio State, these kids will have even more to consider than just the mystique of dotting the i in Columbus.
Meyer won two national championships in first four seasons at Florida and his career head coaching record is an astonishing 104-23.
This is and would be the perfect time for Ohio State to capitalize on the rivalry between themselves and the Wolverines.
While the rest of the country is wondering what will happen with LSU, Alabama and Arkansas, Meyer's name alone is enough to draw more eyes to college football's best rivalry.
The Buckeyes want to get back into the national championship picture, and Meyer is the perfect choice to do it.
If both sides can work quickly, they can achieve a whole lot in a short span of time this weekend alone.
If they falter, they've unnecessarily wasted time.
