Urban Meyer Ohio State: Retired Coach Wise to Deny Reports
The rumors continue to swirl about Urban Meyer becoming the next head coach at Ohio State, but at this time, the current TV analyst is making the right move by denying any and all reports.
It's a holiday weekend, and if Meyer were to be announced as the Buckeyes' next head coach, chaos would ensue. Now is not the time for Meyer to confirm anything, because it would ruin the time with his family.
The former Florida Gators head coach retired because of health reasons, and he wanted to spend more time with his family. Not long after he left Florida, he joined ESPN as a college football analyst. So much for hanging out with the family more.
Sure, the stress of coaching was gone, but he was still traveling. If he likes traveling, then the best move would be to do all of that with his family. Now Meyer gets a real chance to be with his family, and the media continues to hound him over the rumors of him coaching at Ohio State.
It's hard to see why Meyer wouldn't join the Buckeyes, especially with so many media outlets' sources confirming it's a done deal.
Still, though, we should let the man have his holiday weekend and then go from there.
WKMG in Orlando is reporting that Meyer has accepted a seven-year deal worth $40 million. Sports by Brooks is adamant Meyer will join Ohio State as early as next week.
There were reports early that said he would be the next coach, but those recent media claims are really stirring the pot. This prompted Meyer to respond quickly. Naturally, he went to his current employer. Per Palmer and Pollack's Twitter.
If Meyer had called ESPN to tell them he has indeed accepted the job, his entire Thanksgiving would be ruined. Sure, it's partially ruined, but if Meyer were to confirm these reports, he would have to make TV appearances as well as at Ohio State.
His life would be in a frenzy again, and that isn't something he wants or needs at this time. Thanksgiving is a time to be happy and thankful for the loved ones in your life, but Meyer wouldn't get much of that if he took the job now.
Meyer told The Gainesville Sun a short time ago that there are a few things he would have to think about to return to coaching.
"The concerns are still there. No. 1—my health. No. 2—my family. No. 3—the state of college football."
He's choosing family right now, and I can respect that. There is no need for him to accept the job right now. He claims no offer has been made, but it's pretty obvious the Buckeyes want him as their next coach.
In no way am I saying Meyer shouldn't take the job. He would be an instant hit with the Buckeyes and they would no doubt revert to their winning ways.
However, this is the time of year to be with family, and that's why he made the right decision by denying all the reports.
I have a feeling it won't be much longer until Meyer is announced as Ohio State's next coach, but right now, spending time with family is key, so let him try to have a somewhat normal Thanksgiving.
