Rich Rodriguez Arizona: Report Says Wildcats to Name Rich Rod Head Coach
Shortly after Urban Meyer reportedly declined the Arizona Wildcats' offer to be their new head coach, Arizona has instead turned to Rich Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, who had a disappointing three-year stint with Michigan before getting fired last season, has been working as an analyst for CBS Sports in the meantime.
Now it appears he's set to return to the game he loves.
CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman tweeted on Monday:
According to Feldman, Rodriguez is expected to bring along some of his top assistants from Michigan and West Virginia, where he made a name for himself.
Despite heading into a tough situation in Ann Arbor, don't forget what Rodriguez did at West Virginia.
Rodriguez compiled a 60-26 record with the Mountaineers in seven seasons. After starting out 3-8 in his first year on the job, he ended up leading the Mountaineers to at least 10 wins and a BCS bowl game in three consecutive seasons.
He's also known as the pioneer of the run-oriented spread offense, which figures to work better out West.
Arizona has stumbled to a 3-8 record this season, despite some solid play from senior quarterback Nick Foles. The Wildcats did beat in-state rival Arizona State on Saturday, but the Sun Devils were already flailing at that point after a promising start.
Rodriguez once again enters a tough situation, but this is nothing new for him. The Wildcats haven't won more than eight games in a season since 1998 and didn't reach a bowl game for nine straight seasons from 1999-2007.
On top of that, his biggest playmaker, Foles, will be gone by next season.
But at West Virginia, and at Glenville State before that, Rodriguez showed he could lead a team back to respectability.
He's been given a chance to turn back the clock.
