Philadelphia Marathon 2011 Results: Men and Women's Top Finishers
The Philadelphia Marathon saw its fair share of highs and lows on Sunday.
The highs were the impressive times for the winners.
Folisho Tuko of Ethopia won the men's title with a time of 2:19:14. Kevin Pool (2:19:22) and Hollary Cheruiyot (2:19:57) weren't too far behind.
The women's title-winner was Mariska Kramer of the Netherlands, at 2:35:46 with Tezeta Dengersa (2:44:05) and Jodie Conway (2:44:09) coming in second and third, respectfully.
Kramer improved on her time of 2:38:55 from last year.
Another huge positive was the turnout.There were over 27,000 combined runners for the day's events—that includes the half-marathon, setting a new record in the events 18th year.
60,000 fans were scattered along the 26.2 mile course. Runners started at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. They then circled around through downtown, traveling past City Hall, the Schuykill River and Manayunk before ending right where the race had started.
Jeffrey Lee, a University of Pennsylvania student, died at the finish line, a university spokeswoman confirmed. Lee, 21, was a senior nursing and business student.
Police department spokeswoman Jillian Russell said the other victim, a 40-year-old man, white male, collapsed a quarter-mile from the finish line.The cause of death in both cases has yet to be released.
