Ohio State Football: Why Urban Meyer Would Be a Good Fit for the Buckeyes

Matthew OsborneNov 21, 2011

There has been recent speculation as to whether or not former University of Florida head football coach, Urban Meyer, would accept the same position at The Ohio State University—that is, if offered.

Being an alumnus of Ohio State and a current resident of Columbus, I can tell you, fans would welcome Meyer with open arms.

If people thought that Tressel was the second coming, he would only be an afterthought when compared to Meyer.

Aside from winning two national championships with the Gators, Meyer, 47 years of age, is an Ohio native.  He is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ohio State.  He would later go on to have a successful career at Bowling Green.

The Ohio State job has been rumored to be Meyer's dream job.  In fact, it has been reported that Meyer had a certain clause included in his contract with Florida which enabled him to leave, without financial penalty, if the Ohio State job were ever made available.

Interesting.

With freshman quarterback Braxton Miller, he could serve as Meyer's new Tebow—a young protégé if you will.  The sky is the limit, in regards to what Meyer and Miller could accomplish together.  Rome wasn't built in a day, but bringing a national championship back to Columbus with Meyer at the helm would be possible within a matter of years.

Secondly is recruiting.  Meyer was able to reel in the likes of Joe Haden, Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin, Jeff Demps, Brandon Spikes, Mike Pouncey—the list goes on and on.

Could you imagine the talent that Ohio State could be stocked with?

Not only can Meyer spot talent, but more importantly, he is capable of developing it.  He has ties within the state of Ohio, but Meyer would be able to pull the kids from Florida as well.  Florida would serve as a nice little pipeline to Ohio.  With the speed from Florida and the Midwestern size, Meyer could have quite the deadly offense.

Still the question remains: Would Meyer be a "risky" hire for the Buckeyes?

Some people argue that during his tenure at Florida, more than 30 players were arrested under his watch.  There is always a risk when hiring a big name coach, but Meyer is worth the trouble.  A coach is hired to coach the football team.  He is not hired to be a babysitter.  It is physically impossible to monitor every player at all times.

Furthermore, there is no doubt that Meyer's pro's outweigh his con's.

At this point, Meyer going to Ohio State is merely rumor.  Nothing has been confirmed, and likely wouldn't until the conclusion of the season.

Said Meyer:

"

"I know it's that time of year. I've not been offered any job, and I've certainly not accepted any job," he said.

"

He may have not accepted the job as of yet, but behind closed doors it is safe to say that the two parties have spoken to one another.

The Meyer era would most likely go down as the best ever in Ohio State history.  Ohio State certainly has the cash, it is now only a matter of pulling the trigger.
