BCS Bowl Projections: 4 Teams Ready to Reshape the BCS
Eric BallNov 20, 2011
Next weekend is going to be a disaster for the BCS.
The computers are having enough trouble dealing with all of the one-loss teams that populate the top 10, but next weekend is going to completely fry the computers.
Multiple teams are in a perfect position to take down an opponent at the top of the rankings. The schedule makers look like geniuses for the way they have so many crucial games set up for the final weekend of the season. The pressure is mounting and the expectations can be crippling for a bunch of 18-to-22 year olds...regardless of how talented they are.
Here are four teams that are going to help make the case for a true playoff system in college football.
1. Arkansas Razorbacks
1 of 4This is the only realistic chance for the No. 1 ranked LSU Tigers to lose (sorry Georgia).
QB Tyler Wilson (3,215 yards, 21 TDs) has become a star in the SEC and is arguably the best quarterback in the entire conference.
He has the ability to move the chains on that razor-sharp Tigers pass defense. The Razorbacks have broken the nasty midseason habit of flat first half’s and have now won their past three games by a combined 85 points.
The 10-1 Hogs would make a serious case to be in the BCS Championship game with a win. The BCS computers would not be happy.
2. Tulsa Golden Hurricane
2 of 4Houston is one of only two teams in college football that has yet to lose a game, and the last chance to change that is Friday on the road against Tulsa.
This isn’t your average Conference USA team though. The Golden Hurricane are 8-3 with a perfect conference record and sport the 19th best offense in the country, averaging over 35 points a game.
All three of their losses were to top 10 teams (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Boise State) and while senior QB G.J. Kinne doesn’t have Case Keenum numbers (2,683 yards, 24 TDs), he certainly is no slouch.
A Tulsa win would really screw up how the computers feel about the Cougars.
3. Virginia Cavaliers
3 of 4UVA is coming off a huge win over the Florida State Seminoles and can win the Costal division with a win against the No. 8 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies this weekend.
After a 2-2 start, the Cavaliers have been nothing short of dominant in their four-game win streak that includes wins over Miami and FSU.
Beating the Hokies would drop V-Tech out of the top 10 and potentially an opportunity to play in a BCS bowl. Meanwhile an unranked Virginia would be in the ACC Championship game with a chance to make one of the big five games.
The computers would explode.
4. Northwestern Wildcats
4 of 4Northwestern is already familiar with upsetting good teams. It was only three weeks ago when they shocked Nebraska at home.
Saturday No. 15 Michigan State Spartans come to town after already clinching a spot in the Big 10's inaugural conference championship game against Indiana.
The Wildcats are already bowl eligible and would get a huge boost in the quality of their opponent if they can pull off the upset.
Spartie would still be in the hunt for a spot in the Rose Bowl...but they would be staring at a horrific 20-something ranking in doing so.
Not exactly what the BCS higher ups want.
