Bowl Projections: Dream Matchups for 5 BCS Bowl Games

Richard LangfordNov 20, 2011

The BCS bowl games need to look like what you find below. This would maximize the entertainment excitement for all games.

I've tried to hold onto some semblance of plausibility, while not being bound to it.

Championship Game: LSU vs. Alabama

This is the only way this game can go at this point. Once Oklahoma State, Oregon and Oklahoma all lost this week, there is no other team that can make a reasonable claim to this game.

There is also no other team that deserves it. These two played an epic overtime game when they first met, and the sequel figures to be just as exciting.

This would be an intense smash-mouth affair that is custom-made for football purists.

Rose Bowl: Oregon vs. Michigan State

This would be a great matchup of offense vs. defense. The Spartans are sixth in the nation in points allowed per game, and they have done that largely on the strength of their defensive line.

If a team has any hope of slowing down the Ducks' speed spread option attack, it must be done with a dominant defensive line.

That defensive line would ensure that this game stay close, and there isn't any team more exciting in a close game than Oregon.

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Houston

This would be the game to watch for people that love passing. The combined score could very well go over 100, and the combined passing yards could go over 1,000.

It would take 12 LSU-Alabama matchups to reach those numbers.

Houston is first in passing yards, at 447.5 yards per game. Oklahoma State is second in passing yards per game, at 401.6.

The opportunity to pick two teams like this to go head-to-head on a big stage like this is what is great about the bowl system.

Orange Bowl: Stanford  vs. Virginia Tech

This game would be notable for one reason: the rematch of Andrew Luck vs. Beamer Ball.

The Stanford offensive attack is much more than Luck, but when it comes down to it, Luck is the focal point.

Frank Beamer has always had solid defensive teams, and this year is no different. Virginia Tech is 10th in the nation in points allowed per game, and they would be going up against a Stanford team that is fourth in points scored per game.

Beamer would have all the time in the world to construct a game plan to limit Luck, and beat down the demons spawned from his failure last year.

And that storyline is enough to raise my interest.

Sugar Bowl: Boise State vs. Arkansas

This is another game that would feature two prolific passing attacks. Both of these teams are a real wild card to make a BCS bowl game at this point, but both deserve it.

Boise State can put on a show. They have an efficient attack, a history of success in the big bowl games, and they certainly aren't afraid to put in a trick play or two—or five.

They would be going up against a big-play Razorbacks offense. This game would be littered with exciting plays and lead changes.
