Philadelphia Marathon 2011 Results: Mariska Kramer Cements Legacy with Win
Mariska Kramer ran right into a legacy on Sunday when she captured her second-straight Philadelphia Marathon.
The Netherlands native finished with a time of two hours, 35 minutes and 46 seconds. That was impressively more than five minutes better than her closest competitor.
It also eclipsed her winning time of 2:38:55 from last year. No matter what Kramer does from here she will be remembered as one of the great champions of this race.
The Race
This was the largest field in the 18-year-history of this race. There were over 27,000 combined runners for the day's events—that includes the half-marathon.
60,000 spectators lined the 26.2 mile course. Runners started at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. They then looped around through the historic city, traveling past City Hall, the Schuykill River and Manayunk before ending right where they began.
Men's Results
Folisho Tuko crossed the finish line first on Sunday. He did so in a time of two hours, 19 minutes and 14 seconds to win the men’s division. It was his first Philadelphia Marathon win.
Tragedy
While the efforts of the victors are worth celebrating, this is all put in perspective by two runners that lost their life after collapsing at or near the finish line. Read more on the tragedy here.
