BCS Rankings: Upset Victims That Should Stay in the BCS Top 10
Week 12 of the college football season is now being called "Chaos Week" because everything that we thought we knew, much like the Will Smith's life, got flipped, turned upside down. There were upsets galore and we have no idea what to expect anymore.
That being said, there were a few upset victims that have done enough this season to justify staying the BCS top 10 when the new rankings are released on Sunday night. Some fans might disagree, but you have to look at the body of work before declaring a team dead in the water.
Now I am not saying that these teams should be playing for a national championship, but they do belong in that second-tier of teams who are going to be fighting for a spot in one of the other BCS games.
Here are three teams that should stay near the top of the rankings when they are released.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Even though their national championship hopes went up in flames, the Cowboys are still in a prime position to play in their first BCS game since the format debuted in 1998.
Losing to Iowa State is never going to look good on a resume, but at least they lost on the road and were competitive in the game. It is not like they were blown out; they just had a bad half and paid for it in overtime.
The Cowboys’ haters are going to be out in full force this week, but they still deserve to play in a BCS game. All they have to do is take care of Oklahoma, who suffered a setback of their own against Baylor. Bedlam suddenly doesn’t look as appealing as it did three days ago.
Oregon Ducks
Of all the top teams that lost this week, the Ducks have the best case to still make it into the BCS because they lost to a strong USC team. Granted, they lost at home and that will hurt, but looked at in a vacuum, it is still a loss to a really good team.
No, the Ducks aren’t national championship material, and the fact that they were being talked about for that game before this loss was laughable, but they are still in prime position to play in the BCS.
All they have to do is defeat a 3-8 Oregon State team in Autzen Stadium and they will play for the Pac-12 championship. They are still the most dangerous team in the conference and will prove that this Saturday.
Clemson Tigers
No one is talking about Clemson’s loss to N.C. State because the Tigers already had the ACC’s Atlantic division wrapped up, but that was an embarrassment of epic proportions.
Especially when you consider that three teams ranked above the Tigers in the BCS lost, they had a chance to get back in the national championship race.
Instead, they will have to settle for an appearance in the conference title game—against either Virginia Tech or Virginia—and if they win that, an Orange Bowl berth.
