BCS Rankings: Massive Winners from Upset Saturday
Upsets reigned supreme this week in college football leaving a handful of teams to emerge as big winners.
No. 2 Oklahoma State set the table on Friday for a wild Saturday when they fell to Iowa State. On Saturday, No 4 Oregon, No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 7 Clemson all lost.
Here are the three teams that are now sitting pretty.
No. 3 Alabama
Week 12 Outcome: Alabama 45, Georgia Southern 21
Things really broke Alabama's way this week. They watched the team directly in front of them, Oklahoma State, fall on Friday.
Alabama then won easily against Georgia Southern. However, they did not look particularly dominant as they allowed over 300 yards rushing.
Had Oregon came out and dominated USC, the Ducks may have passed Alabama. Instead, Oregon lost, and so did Oklahoma.
All Alabama has to do now is beat Auburn in the bitter Iron Bowl, and their spot in the BCS Championship Game is virtually locked.
No. 11 Houston
Week 12 Outcome: Houston 37, SMU 7
Houston is now on the verge of doing something no Conference USA team has ever done, and that is play in a BCS bowl game.
The undefeated Cougars needed some help coming into the week, and they got it.
Houston is now No. 8 in the AP poll. They will have to finish their season against a tough Tulsa team and then in the conference championship game. If they can win both they should get into a BCS game.
As we have seen, any team can lose any week, but Houston could easily jump Oklahoma State and Arkansas. The Cowboys play Oklahoma next week, and the Razorbacks take on LSU.
The bottom line is that Houston is in great shape.
No. 15 Michigan State
Week 12 Outcome: Michigan State 55, Indiana 3
Michigan State is in firm control of their destiny. They have secured a berth in the Big Ten championship game, and a trip to the Rose Bowl is the Spartans' to lose.
The Spartans got a little help from their rivals, Michigan. The Wolverines beat Nebraska in Week 12, and this guaranteed the Spartans' spot in the championship game.
In that championship game, the Spartans will now face the winner of next week's Wisconsin-Penn State matchup.
Either way, it is a favorable matchup for the Spartans. They have already beaten Wisconsin this year, and their defensive line will be able to manhandle Penn State's offense by controlling their main weapon, the rushing game.
