Urban Meyer Ohio State Speculation: Columbus Would Be Perfect for Return
Urban Meyer to Ohio State has been a heavily rumored move despite stretching the definition of "rumor" due to a lot of unconfirmed reports by non-mainstream sources.
But there has been enough smoke to cause Meyer to deny the rumors on the telecast of Saturday's Michigan-Nebraska game, so if the Buckeyes are indeed working on a deal with the former Florida coach, Ohio State and Meyer are making the absolute right decision.
Unlike Penn State, Ohio State is a place that isn’t on a downward spiral to irrelevancy. The Buckeyes' program is close to being back to form and Meyer would be the best fit to take the program back to the promised land.
Why would Meyer want to take over at Penn State? Not only would he have to clean up the program, but he would have to clean up to town. Ohio State is the much better fit at this point in time. You better believe that aspect is in his decision.
We have heard it for years in Columbus: “They play cautious football. They are a team that doesn’t take chances under Jim Tressel,” but that wouldn’t be the case with Meyer and his spread-you-out type of offense. It’s just about impossible to stop when you have the right players. He understands aggressive football, and there are few that compare to him.
Ohio State didn’t understand that the landscape of college football was changing right in front of their eyes with up-tempo, spread-you-out type of offenses. If they brought Meyer to the program he would not only bring that style but he would bring it at its pinnacle.
Nobody runs that offense with more success than Meyer.
Meyer knows how to win football games at the college level; he can take average quarterbacks and make them stars in his system. Alex Smith and Tim Tebow excelled for Utah and Florida, respectively, under Meyer’s watch.
The school is still THE Ohio State University and kids want to play in Columbus. The program’s pride, passion and love for the game will draw many top-tier talents to their school, but a coach like Meyer would bring in the absolute best at just about every position.
We have seen the SEC dominate the BCS Championship game since 2006—Florida won two of those championships with Meyer at the helm. Not only does he understand the type of players to bring to a system on offense but he understands the process on defense. He will still be able to recruit athletic, talented players on the defensive side of the ball needed to compete in the conference.
Ohio State needs a valuable coach to bring their football program back to prominence; the Buckeyes need to update their style of football; Meyer needs a program that is on the cusp of returning to glory.
It truly is a perfect fit.
