UFC 139 Fight Card: What a Loss Would Mean for Stephan Bonnar
UFC 139 will see the re-emergence of Stephan “The American Psycho” Bonnar after almost a year since his last foray in the Octagon when he defeated Igor Pokrajac.
At present, Bonnar is on a two-fight winning streak and I assume he would like to keep that streak alive.
To accomplish that, he needs to take care of that Kyle Kingsbury business tonight.
Bonnar has taken on and lost to some of the light heavyweight division's elites—Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida, Forrest Griffin (twice), Rashad Evans, Jon “Bones” Jones and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman.
Still, Bonnar’s a handful for any fighter residing in that division, including “Kingsbu.”
The main issue going into this fight will be Bonnar’s layoff—will Octagon rust be a factor or will he able to shake off the cobwebs?
No one is privy to that information other than Bonnar himself. But the paying public will find out when we get to watch him throw down at UFC 139.
Kingsbu has a background in Muay Thai and wrestling, and has won "Fight of the Night" honors on two separate occasions.
Needless to say, Kingsbu hasn’t fought anywhere near the level of competition that Bonnar has, which could actually work in Bonnar’s favor, but only if his Octagon rust becomes apparent during the fight.
I have an inkling that with Bonnar’s all-around skill set, he’ll either eke out a hard fought victory, or win via submission.
On the other hand, if Bonnar were to lose, it would be detrimental to his career—he’d be out of the title picture and further down the rankings for sure.
He could also contemplate calling time-out on his career.
