Penn State Scandal: NCAA Begins Investigation, Where Will It End?

Danny FlynnNov 18, 2011

What a surprise, the NCAA is trying to poke its head somewhere it doesn’t belong.

Today, it was reported that NCAA president Mark Emmert has sent a letter to Penn State informing the school that the NCAA will be conducting its own investigation into the sex abuse scandal and alleged cover-up that shook the foundation of the university this past week.

The only problem is, the NCAA doesn’t have the jurisdiction or authority to levy any sanctions against Penn State, that is, unless it all of a sudden decides to retroactively write new bylaws.

That would result in a massive lawsuit from Penn State, though, so I highly doubt that will happen.

This is an issue for the courts to decide, not for the NCAA to get involved with.

There were no boosters paying players, there were no agents buying jerseys, there were no coaches trying to buy recruits.

There were no athletes involved period.

This is simply not an NCAA matter.

The organization is likely just putting on investigation for show in order to please a public that’s demanding some type of consequences justice.

In a case of this magnitude, there’s simply no need for the NCAA to come into town and start clouding everything up and complicating things.

Maybe instead of investigating Penn State, the NCAA should do a self-investigation on itself and try to find out how they’ve let the power balance in college football grow so out of whack.

The NCAA can surely learn a lot from this terrible scandal, and work with schools and athletic departments to create moral and ethical guidelines for the future, but the one thing that the NCAA can’t do is punish Penn State legally.

The NCAA may love power trips, but this isn’t the time or the place for the members to start trying to assert their authority.

Serious crimes have been allegedly committed and serious legal actions need to be brought against those who may be accused.

This is not the time for the NCAA to break out its big, thick rulebook and try to twist a certain bylaw into matching up with what happened at Penn State.

This is not SMU all over again.

Penn State was not on probation and there were no NCAA violations committed.

So NCAA, please kindly leave this serious matter to the real police, and go back to checking on forged SAT scores and shady memorabilia sales.

Your presence is not needed in State College.
