College Basketball Predictions: Picking First and Second All-SEC Hoops Teams
There's a lot of future NBA talent playing in the SEC this season, and it's not all in Lexington, Kentucky.
High risers who can throw down. Big men who can bang. Sizzling shooters who can bomb.
While four teams—Kentucky, Florida, Vanderbilt and Alabama—started the season ranked in the preseason polls, many more will challenge those teams for a place in the top level of the league.
It's hard to narrow this list down, but here are 10 players who could make up the All-SEC First and Second teams.
Second Team: Marshawn Powell (Arkansas Razorbacks)
1 of 10Marshawn Powell may not be one of the new players on campus in Fayetteville, but he is still a great player to build around.
The 6'7", 235-pound junior forward was a unanimous SEC All-Freshmen team selection in 2010, but injuries slowed him last season.
After a less-than-spectacular start, Powell finished 2010-11 second on the team in scoring (10.8), rebounding (4.5) and shooting percentage (46.6).
Powell is off to a great start this year, leading the team in scoring (19.5), rebounding (6.0) and blocks (1.5).
Second Team: Patric Young (Florida Gators)
2 of 10Patric Young is one of the most impressive physical specimens in the SEC.
Young's game is similar to that of Dwight Howard—intimidating, physical and above the rim.
Last year, he was selected as a CollegeInsider.com Freshman All-American.
He is the main post presence for this year's Gators team.
After three games this season, Young is averaging 11 points, nine rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.3 steals per game.
Second Team: Dee Bost (Mississippi State Bulldogs)
3 of 10Dee Bost is a multi-talented scoring point guard.
Bost is as equally skilled at putting the ball in the hole as he is delivering the ball to open teammates.
After four games this season, Bost leads the Bulldogs in scoring (18), assists (3.0) and steals (2.5) and adds 5.3 rebounds per game.
If he can get the talent in Starkville working together, Mississippi State could be a dark horse team in league play and possibly the NCAA tournament.
Second Team: Jeffery Taylor (Vanderbilt Commodores)
4 of 10Jeffery Taylor is a multi-talented wing player who will play an important role in Vanderbilt's big season.
Taylor (6' 7", 225 pounds) was named a second team All-SEC player in 2010-11 and 2009-10 after being named to the All-SEC Freshman team in 2008-09.
This year, he is the Commodores' second leading scorer (14.7 and shooting 50 percent from the field) and tied for the team lead in rebounding (7.0) and assists (2.3).
Vandy is built to win this season. They have talent and experience. Now they need players like Taylor to get it done.
Second Team: Doron Lamb (Kentucky Wildcats)
5 of 10Doron Lamb is one of the most underrated offensive players among the stars in the SEC.
Last year, he was the No. 3 scorer for the Wildcats (12.3), hitting 49.7 percent of his shots from the field and 48.6 percent from beyond the arc.
Even with the influx of new elite-level talent in Lexington, Lamb has elevated his game this year.
He is scoring 16 points per game, shooting 50 percent from the field and 60 percent from downtown in Kentucky's first two games.
First Team: Kenny Boynton (Florida Gators)
6 of 10Kenny Boynton is an explosive player who can score points in bunches and lock down opponents on the defensive end of the court.
Boynton is off to a fast start again this season, scoring 18 points per game—which leads the Gators—2.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals.
He is shooting 51.4 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Even with Florida's crazy backcourt talent, Boynton will continue to lead Billy Donovan's wide open attack.
First Team: John Jenkins (Vanderbilt Commodores)
7 of 10John Jenkins is a lethal weapon on the offensive end.
He led the SEC in scoring (19.5) and three-point field goals made per game (3.1).
He also finished second in free throw percentage (.894).
He scored 41 points in the Commodores' first two games this season. Unfortunately, an ankle injury prevented him from playing in their third game against Bucknell.
Jenkins will be a game-time decision moving forward but is not expected to miss a significant amount of time.
First Team: JaMychal Green (Alabama Crimson Tide)
8 of 10JaMychal Green is ready for a super senior season.
In 2010-11, Green was Alabama's leading scorer (15.5), rebounder (7.5) and shot-blocker (2.1).
Green (6' 8", 230 pounds) helped the Crimson Tide win the SEC West last year and looks to take them to the NCAA tournament this season.
He was an SEC First teamer last year, and there's no reason to believe he won't be right there again in 2011-12.
First Team: Terrence Jones (Kentucky Wildcats)
9 of 10In a college basketball season that has as many talented power forwards as any year in memory, Terrence Jones is one of the best in the country.
Jones had an excellent freshman season (15.7 PPG and 8.8 RPG) and was recognized as the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year.
He is able to pull a double-double any night, and did so 12 times last season, including a Final Four game against UConn in which he recorded 11 points and 15 rebounds.
If Terrence Jones can elevate his game at both ends of the court this season, look for Kentucky to play for the 2012 NCAA championship in New Orleans.
First Team: Anthony Davis (Kentucky Wildcats)
10 of 10Anthony Davis is the best player in a very talent-rich 2011-12 SEC.
At 6'10", 220 pounds, you might be tempted to put Davis down on the block and let him operate.
But he is an excellent shooter, ball-handler and passer and can do it all on the perimeter as well.
It helps that Davis shot up eight inches during high school from 6'2." Now he has perimeter skills with a power forward's body.
In his first two collegiate games, Davis is averaging 18.5 points, eight rebounds and a ridiculous six blocks per game.
There is no reason to believe this is a quick start that will be followed by an equally quick freshman fade.
Davis is as much the real deal as other past Calipari recruits, including John Wall, Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans.
