Ohio State Football: Can DeVier Posey's Return Revive Anemic Passing Game?

Tim BielikNov 17, 2011

To say that Ohio State's passing attack has been bad is merely an understatement.

When the only teams your passing game is better than are Army and Navy, two teams that run the triple option, that's just simply unacceptable.

But that lack of results can be attributed to any number of things: injuries and suspensions all over the WR corps, inexperience at the QB position and, in the minds of most Buckeye fans, inept playcalling by Jim Bollman.

Whatever the case may be, this ill passing game needs some medicine.

That might come in the form of senior DeVier Posey, who was suspended for the first 10 games of the season due to repeated NCAA rules violations.

Regardless of his production in the final two games of the season, odds are that the whole OSU offense might open up because the Buckeyes will finally have a receiver that defenses must respect.

For most of the season, defenses have loaded the box because they do not respect any Buckeye wideouts.

Starting on Saturday against Penn State, that will have to change, and it could happen with just one home run ball.

Braxton Miller has shown he can throw the ball deep, although his accuracy has been off more times than not, except of course for his game-winning bomb to Devin Smith against Wisconsin.

But even though he is just a freshman at QB, he has not had the experienced targets to throw to that Terrelle Pryor had back in 2008.

He has not had his top three receivers, Posey, Verlon Reed and Corey Brown, together on the field at any point this season—Posey due to suspension, and Reed and Brown due to injuries.

By adding Posey alone, and with possibly Brown's return on Saturday, the Buckeye pass attack might start to have some teeth.

That alone should help free up Miller and Dan Herron in the running game because having legitimate passing threats should help open up the box, which has been congested all season long.

Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen.

But there's almost no doubt that adding a player of Posey's experience and talent will help alleviate some of what has ailed OSU's offense.

Plus if the performances of Herron and Mike Adams after returning from suspension have been any indication, Posey could explode as early as Saturday.

Whether or not this is, in fact, the last home game for the OSU coaching staff, Saturday seems like the best opportunity for the Buckeye offense to get off the ground at long last.
