Presidents Cup: The US Will Double Its Lead on Day 2
The US has never taken a first day lead and lost the tournament in the President's Cup. There's no reason to believe that this year will be any different. The US will get the best of today's matches and only strengthen their lead heading into the weekend.
Match 7
Match 7 will feature Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson against Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa. While Els holds the course record Ishikawa was too late and frankly, just looked out of place yesterday. Not only does he not know the course, he had little time to practice due to his late arrival.
The Internaionals took an early two hole lead, but they couldn't stave off the Americans who won six of the final 12 holes. A large part of the reason is that Watson and Simpson just mesh together better.
Another day will only add to that advantage. They won't need a comeback today. The Americans will win this match handily.
Americans: 1, Internationals: 0
Match 8
Match 8 sees Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson going up against Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day. Day 1 was a "Day" that went "Badeley" for everyone. Johnson never held a lead. Woods just had a terrible day, joining Steve Stricker in suffering the worst loss in the history of the Presidents Cup. The International pair bogeyed the last two holes to see a win turn into a draw.
US Captain Fred Couples switched up the pairings for today's match, moving Matt Kuchar to pair with Steve Stricker and subbing in Johnson to play with Woods.
Woods has been inconsistent for over a year now and it's unlikely the Baddeley and Day pairing is going to have a similar melt down as they did yesterday. Woods could have a turnaround but unless he does. Look for the Internationals to win this one.
Americans: 1, Internationals: 1
Match 9
Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk will be going against the pairing of Adam Scott and Kyung-tae Kim. Kim is a President's Cup rookie, and while Adam Scott did yesterday, he will be asked to carry Kim. It's not going to happen. Mickelson is putting well and the Americans should win handily.
Americans: 2, Internationals 1
Match 10
Bill Hass and Nick Watney face off against the pairing of Geoff Ogilvy and K.J. Choi, who participated in the Tiger hunt yesterday. Most are picking Ogilvy, who knows the course as well as any, and Choi to win this match, but Fred Couples likes the chemistry between Hass and Watney and so do I. Look for an upset here.
Americans 3, Internationals 1
Match 11
Steve Stricker, the other half of the Woods tandem that crumbled yesterday, will be paired with Matt Kuchar. He'll be going against Y.E. Yang and Robert Allenby. Here Allenby and the home crowd will be enough to help support and carry Yang. Stricker won't be able to bounce back from yesterday's debacle. Look for the Internationals to take this one.
Americans: 3, Internationals 2
Match 12
Hunter Mahan and David Toms didn't even make things close last year going against Kim and Yang yesterday. Today they will face the more experienced Retief Goosen and Charl Schwartzel. The difference won't change though, in spite of Goosen's outstanding 6-2-1 Presidents Cup record. The Americans will take this one too.
Americans: 4, Internationals 2
When all is said and done the Americans will have doubled up their lead and be sitting on an 8-4 lead going into the weekend.
