LSU Football: Will Les Miles Continue to Rotate His Quarterbacks?

Danny FlynnNov 17, 2011

You can’t argue with success, no matter how it’s attained, and so far, whether it’s been pretty at times or not, LSU’s two-quarterback system has led the Tigers to an undefeated record and the No. 1 ranking in the nation.

It looks like head coach Les Miles has found a proper balance between his two quarterbacks, Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson, since Jefferson returned from a suspension in Week 5.

Early on in the season, it was Lee who was the main man for the Tigers, with Jefferson seeing a few secondary snaps, but that changed in the “Game of the Century” against Alabama, when Lee reverted back to his old self, throwing two killer interceptions.

Miles leaned on Jefferson the rest of the way, and while he wasn’t exactly great, he got the job done against the Tide and kept the LSU train rolling.

Jefferson then proceeded to get the starting nod, his first of the season, in this past weekend’s 42-9 victory over Western Kentucky. The senior signal-caller went 8-for-14 and threw one touchdown.

One of the hot topics that everyone is now talking about around the SEC is how Miles will continue to handle his quarterback situation the rest of the way, as LSU looks to make a push towards the SEC championship game and then ultimately make it to New Orleans to play for the BCS title.

With No. 6 Arkansas, one of the top passing teams in the country, waiting around the corner, the Tigers are going to have to make sure their passing attack is up to snuff in order to keep up with the Razorbacks on Thanksgiving weekend.

So the question is, will Miles start to simply ride the hot hand, or will he try to balance out the reps for both of his quarterbacks?

Tiger fans have to like what they saw out of Jefferson last week, even though the caliber of opponent wasn’t all that great, but besides the Alabama game, Lee has really been the one who helped guide the team to where it is today.

Right now, though, you have to go with the quarterback making the fewest major mistakes.

With the way the LSU defense is playing, you don’t need Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III at quarterback to win games, you just need a guy who can manage the game, hand the ball to Spencer Ware and Michael Ford and not throw any critical picks.

Before the Alabama game, Jarrett Lee was exactly that guy, but now you have to wonder if his confidence has been shaken a bit.

As we get down to the real nitty-gritty part of the season, there is very little room for error, and it should be interesting to see how Les Miles handles his quarterback rotation from here on out.

It may be time to just find one guy and ride him to the finish line, but it never hurts to have options. So far, Miles has shown that he’s got the magic touch when it comes to managing his quarterbacks.
